This delightful children's book is illustrated with watercolour paintings of an A to Z of Australian and New Zealand birds. An interesting snippet of information about each bird captures the interest of children and the whimsical comparison of each bird to the wingspan of an Albatross compares the size of the birds. Flight of a friendship and a dream come true. A story that values trust, unity and diversity. PLOT: The protagonists of this short story are two birds: Albatross Chiloé, the biggest bird in the world, and tiny hummingbird Didì, the smallest bird in the world. What these two characters have in common is the infinite desire to discover and see new places. However, the big difference between the two is that the Albatross sees the world from the top while observing its beauty in its entirety, desiring to rise above and search for breathtaking scenery, without caring to discover the beauty of the small details the earth provides. The small hummingbird instead is aware of the spectacular and minute paradise in which she lives. However, even if conscious of the physical impossibility, she fervently desires to fly over the sky and taste the flavour of the clouds and observe the sea from above. Their paths cross when Chiloé, during one of his many long journeys, sees from above a small emerald island in which Didì lives and decides to descend and rest a bit. During this encounter the Albatross, thanks to the joyful and kind attitude of the Hummingbird, discovers the beauty of small details and of how wonderful the world is seen from below. In order to return the favour he gifts Didì the dream of flying high above in the sky, beyond the clouds, making her taste the flavour she longed for and giving her the opportunity to observe the sea from above. As frequently happens in life, they live this dream together. THEMES: This short story combats racial prejudice and suggests seeing diversity as a learning opportunity rather than an obstacle. When diversity is accepted, it gives the opportunity of reaching goals and dreams far above our personal and singular capacities. It is a story that encloses, in itself, the strength of dreams and unity - both powerful personal growth stimulants. It gifts the reader the extraordinary valour of trust and the saving desire of seeing beyond. The book not only describes the actions of the characters, but relates the feelings and thoughts expressed in various situations, playing a significant role in the events and in the telling of the story. The vocabulary used, although appropriate for the age group to which it is addressed, is at times deliberately sophisticated, so as to stimulate reflection and the consequent acquisition of new terminology, perhaps through the explanation of a parent or of an adult. There are many amusing word games, through juxtapositions, assonances and the meaning of phrases, with the awareness that it is up to each young reader to make every little part of the story their own. The text includes onomatopoeic sounds, dialogues and descriptions, written in a lively, soft language that makes the narrative more captivating and lively. It is a book that contains many illustrations to help the reader understand the plot and develop imagination. Fly now with your child between the pages of this book!

“At length did cross an Albatross, / Through the fog it came; / As if it had been a Christian soul, / We hailed it in God’s name.” The introduction of the albatross in Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” remains one of the most well-known references to this majestic seabird in Western culture. In Albatross, Graham Barwell goes beyond Coleridge to examine the role the bird plays in the lives of a wide variety of peoples and societies, from the early views of north Atlantic mariners to modern encounters by writers, artists, and filmmakers. Exploring how the bird has been celebrated in proverbs, folk stories, art, and ceremonies, Barwell shows how people marvel at the way the albatross soars through the air, covering awe-inspiring distances with little effort thanks to its impressive wingspan. He surveys the many approaches people have taken to thinking about the albatross over the past two hundred years—from those who devoted their lives to these birds to those who hunted them for food and sport—and discusses its place in the human imagination. Concluding with a reflection on the bird’s changing significance in the modern world, Barwell considers threats to its continued existence and its prospects for the future. With one hundred illustrations from nature, film, and popular culture, Albatross is an absorbing look at these beautiful birds.

"Albatrosses are largely confined to the region referred to by early mariners as the Roaring Forties and the Furious Fifties, otherwise known as the Southern Ocean. The single most distinctive characteristic of the albatrosses is that they ride storms. Aside from a few close relatives among the petrels and shearwaters, they are the only animals (of any kind) that do this. They dont evade storms, or flee them, or grit their figurative teeth and hang on through them, they climb aboard and ride them effectively throughout their lives. This work outlines the life histories of these spectacular birds, and explores some of the main strategies and tactics that have evolved to enable them to achieve mastery of one of the most hostile regions on the planet. It describes the 24 species of albatrosses found worldwide, including the most important species from an Australian perspective (Wandering Albatross, Shy Albatross, Black-browed Albatross, Sooty Albatross)"-- Provided by publisher.
