On This Great Stage of Fools is an Australian memoir written by Mark Dobbins, an English teacher who lives on the Central Coast near Sydney, Australia. The early stages show a contrast between entertaining childhood adventures and a life lived in fear of a very violent father. There are evocative scenes of paternal violence, and even a shocking, bloody encounter between the father and a neighbour. The father is also expert in the application of passive aggression towards the author, his siblings and his mother. This compelling tale includes plenty of historical and cultural interest: working class Australia in the 50s and 60s and beyond. The author's school days are full of inspirational teachers, wild and whacky friends, and a love of learning ... mixed with cruelty, violence and bullying. The author leaves home at 16 and has to find a job and a safe place to live, almost overnight. Thus, school ends in Year 11 and his dreams of becoming an English teacher seem dashed forever. But he still yearns to fulfill his calling ... to go to university and then become an English teacher. There are references to contemporary songs, and several Shakespearean themes reverberate in the background. One motif is the unknown, unseen balance between luck or fate and our ability to rise above what life sometimes dishes up. This memoir is about a boy's search for a hero and a man's survival in a world determined to test his mettle time and again. It ultimately shows that on this great stage of fools, you can get by with a little help from your friends.

Is King Lear an autonomous text, or a rewrite of the earlier and anonymous play King Leir? Should we refer to Shakespeare’s original quarto when discussing the play, the revised folio text, or the popular composite version, stitched together by Alexander Pope in 1725? What of its stage variations? When turning from page to stage, the critical view on King Lear is skewed by the fact that for almost half of the four hundred years the play has been performed, audiences preferred Naham Tate's optimistic adaptation, in which Lear and Cordelia live happily ever after. When discussing King Lear, the question of what comprises ‘the play’ is both complex and fragmentary. These issues of identity and authenticity across time and across mediums are outlined, debated, and considered critically by the contributors to this volume. Using a variety of approaches, from postcolonialism and New Historicism to psychoanalysis and gender studies, the leading international contributors to King Lear: New Critical Essays offer major new interpretations on the conception and writing, editing, and cultural productions of King Lear. This book is an up-to-date and comprehensive anthology of textual scholarship, performance research, and critical writing on one of Shakespeare's most important and perplexing tragedies. Contributors Include: R.A. Foakes, Richard Knowles, Tom Clayton, Cynthia Clegg, Edward L. Rocklin, Christy Desmet, Paul Cantor, Robert V. Young, Stanley Stewart and Jean R. Brink

With few exceptions, commentaries on the four plays of William Wycherley are surface in nature and do not offer a unified vision for the dramatic canon produced by the greatest of Restoration comic playwrights. Traditionally the plays have been defined as comedies of manners or of wit, with either approach vastly limiting our understanding of the plays' depth and complexity... There is, however, a much deeper concern which lies at the heart of Wycherley's drama and gives unity to the four comedies, and it is this overriding theme that Professor Marshall explores to demonstrate Wycherley's transcendence of recognized Restoration theatrical devices and concern with theatricality itself: not with the mere social pretense... but with the ancient topos of theatrum mundi.. In short, marshall declares Wycherley's plays metatheatre, and herein lies their true substance and meaning, as well as tehir most innovative contributions to the development of English comedy (from the Introduction).

"Nothing will come of nothing: speak again." --- William Shakespeare, King Lear "When we are born, we cry that we are come to this great stage of fools." --- William Shakespeare, King Lear King Lear is a tragedy by William Shakespeare. The titular character descends into madness after disposing of his estate between two of his three daughters based on their flattery, bringing tragic consequences for all. Based on the legend of Leir of Britain, a mythological pre-Roman Celtic king, the play has been widely adapted for the stage and motion pictures, with the title role coveted by many of the world's most accomplished actors. Originally drafted between 1603 and its first known performance in 1607, the first attribution to Shakespeare was a 1608 publication in quarto of uncertain provenance; it may be an early draft or simply reflect the first performance text. The Tragedy of King Lear, a more theatrical revision, was included in the 1623 First Folio. Modern editors usually conflate the two, though some insist that each version has its individual integrity that should be preserved. After the Restoration, the play was often revised with a happy ending for audiences who disliked its dark and depressing tone, but since the 19th century Shakespeare's original version has been regarded as one of his supreme achievements. The tragedy is particularly noted for its probing observations on the nature of human suffering and kinship. George Bernard Shaw wrote, "No man will ever write a better tragedy than Lear".
