THE INSPIRING, REVEALING STORY OF ONE WOMAN’S YEARS BEHIND CONVENT WALLS AND HER RETURN TO THE WORLD OUTSIDE In 1925 Mary McCarran joined her sister Margaret in the Convent of the Holy Names. Here is the story of the black-garbed postulant, hopeful and homesick. Here is the nun, tried and proven, exchanging vows for a gold wedding ring. Sister Mary Mercy made her greatest sacrifice in a small convent room where, after thirty-two years, she exchanged her beloved habit for a new pink dress—and returned to the secular world. This is Mary McCarran’s unforgettable and inspiring story of those three decades as a member of a religious community. “An apparently faithful view of some inner workings of the Catholic Church seldom revealed dispassionately to the public at large...an altogether extraordinary story told in an extraordinary manner.”—NEW YORK JOURNAL AMERICAN

***New York Times Bestseller*** 'So damn good. A page-turner that makes you think and has a huge emotional impact' Jeff VanderMeer, author of Annihilation A wild and gripping novel about one woman's quest to reintroduce wolves to the Scottish Highlands at any cost Inti Flynn arrives in the Scottish Highlands with fourteen grey wolves, a traumatised sister and fierce tenacity. As a biologist, she knows the animals are the best hope for rewilding the ruined landscape and she cares little for local opposition. As a sister, she hopes the remote project will offer her twin, Aggie, a chance to heal after the horrific events that drove them both out of Alaska. But violence dogs their footsteps and one night Inti stumbles over the body of a farmer. Unable to accept that her wolves could be responsible, she makes a reckless decision to protect them. But if the wolves didn't make the kill, then who did? And can she trust the man she is beginning to love when he becomes the main suspect? Propulsive and unforgettable, Once There Were Wolves is the spellbinding story of a woman desperate to save her family, the wild animals and the natural world she loves, at any cost. 'One of those very rare, special novels that changes you as you read' Laurie Frankel

This book provides and accessible text and critical analysis of the concepts and delivery of community justice, a focal point in contemporary criminal justice. The probation service in particular has undergone radical changes in relation to professional training, roles and delivery of services, but now operates within a mosaic of a number of inter-agency initiatives. This book aims to provide a critical appreciation of community justice, its origin and direction, and to engage with debates on the ways in which the trend towards community justice is changing the criminal justice system. At the same time it examines the inter-agency character of intervention and the developing idea of end-to-end offender management, and familiarises the reader with a number of more specialist area, such as hate crime, mental illness, substance abuse, and victims.

Epistolary Community In Print 1580 1664 written by Diana G. Barnes and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-13 with Literary Criticism categories.

Epistolary Community in Print contends that the printed letter is an inherently sociable genre ideally suited to the theorisation of community in early modern England. In manual, prose or poetic form, printed letter collections make private matters public, and in so doing reveal, first how tenuous is the divide between these two realms in the early modern period and, second, how each collection helps to constitute particular communities of readers. Consequently, as Epistolary Community details, epistolary visions of community were gendered. This book provides a genealogy of epistolary discourse beginning with an introductory discussion of Gabriel Harvey and Edmund Spenser’s Wise and Wittie Letters (1580), and opening into chapters on six printed letter collections generated at times of political change. Among the authors whose letters are examined are Angel Day, Michael Drayton, Jacques du Bosque and Margaret Cavendish. Epistolary Community identifies broad patterns that were taking shape, and constantly morphing, in English printed letters from 1580 to 1664, and then considers how the six examples of printed letters selected for discussion manipulate this generic tradition to articulate ideas of community under specific historical and political circumstances. This study makes a substantial contribution to the rapidly growing field of early modern letters, and demonstrates how the field impacts our understanding of political discourses in circulation between 1580 and 1664, early modern women’s writing, print culture and rhetoric.
