Years after his baseball career was derailed by a violent accident, our national pastime reappeared in his life – and has remained to this day. What follows is his extraordinary journey – baseball has taken him on a ride from the little leagues to the major leagues, and all stops in between. Jan’s memoir, Once Upon a Time in Baseball: My Pastime Summers, is a nostalgic look back at the golden age of baseball through the eyes of a young boy growing up in the 1950s, to a man in his fifties throwing batting practice for the newest entry in MLB, the 1993 Colorado Rockies. The book starts on the playground when, as a passionate fan, Jan was learning to play the game, and trading baseball cards, including the time he literally gave away one of the most valuable cards of all time. In high school, college and semi-pro, he discovered his talent as a pitcher, throwing a number of no-hitters. His dream was coming true – in the game he loved so much, and was on track for what he hoped would be a career in the big leagues. Then the summer following his sophomore year in college he was almost killed in a car wreck which ended his major-league dreams, or so he thought. Decades later he found himself back on the hill, throwing batting practice for the Rockies for six years, including throwing at Dodger Stadium and Wrigley Field, and culminating in the honor of presenting his book, Legacy of a Monarch – an American Journey, the biography of an all-star shortstop for the Kansas City Monarchs, at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in 2006. Once Upon a Time in Baseball is a look back at the glory days of baseball, when it was sports king in America. Everyone who lived and loved the game back then will find this story brings back longing memories of days gone by.

After a young stranger walks up to Elizabeth Kenney on campus, and announces that he's her brother, she drops out of school to begin a startling and surprising search of a family she's never taken the time to know. She learns of a wanderlust grandfather, bomber pilot and hero of WWII and Korea, then of her own surgeon father and his idyllic and unbreakable bond with his father. This nostalgic and sometimes spiritual story takes the reader through America's Depression, the wars, and postwar California and Mid-America, where safe tranquility unsuspectingly teeters on the threshold of today's helter-skelter world. Elizabeth becomes torn between the wishes of her affluent, matriarchal grandmother and her own creative needs. So, caught up in the editing of her father's stored journals, Elizabeth creates a modern fairytale that tenderly invites every reader with love, laughter and tears.

In three books I tried to capture all aspects of the Old West—the rowdy towns, saloons, prostitutes, homesteaders, cattle ranchers, cattle rustlers, cattle drives, stampedes, canvas-covered wagons, wagon trains, wild horses, cowboys, Indians, miners and prospectors, fur traders, claimjumpers, sheriffs, outlaws, gunfighters, railroads and trains, stagecoaches, banks and holdups, love, life, and death—when I wrote the trilogy of “Once Upon A Time In The Past”. Book One of Once Upon A Time in the Past, subtitled “The Sons Of Sam Logan”—involves four young boys, Chance William, Burt Wiley, Peter Wallace and Jesse Lee “Boots” Logan, a black youth who adopts the Logan name, who grows up and become outlaws—opens circa 1890 in Payton, Kansas: Rancher Clay Miller sat behind his desk staring at four miniature porcelain horses: a black and white piebald; black, white-rump appaloosa; golden palomino with a white blazed face; and a black stallion with a diamond-shaped white dot on its forehead. The rancher’s eyes then stared down at a necklace made with pure gold nuggets wedged together on a long string of rawhide-leather with a black, genuine Indian arrowhead at the end. He reached down and picked the necklace up. A shadow of sudden gloominess crossed his face as he gazed at the necklace. A finger fiddled unconsciously with the arrowhead dangling at the end of it, as he held the necklace in his hands, staring into space. The necklace brought back memories of the past—good times and bad times. His thoughts wiggled and waggled as his recollections took him back into time long before he was a man:

Once Upon a Time in a Different World, a unique addition to the celebrated Children’s Literature and Culture series, seeks to move discussions and treatments of ideas in African America Children’s literature from the margins to the forefront of literary discourse. Looking at a variety of topics, including the moralities of heterosexism, the veneration of literacy, and the "politics of hair," Neal A. Lester provides a scholarly and accessible compilation of essays that will serve as an invaluable resource for parents, students, and educators. The much-needed reexamination of African American children’s texts follows an engaging call-and-response format, allowing for a lively and illuminating discussion between its primary author and a diverse group of contributors; including educators, scholars, students, parents, and critics. In addition to these distinct dialogues, the book features an enlightening generational conversation between Lester and his teenage daughter as they review the same novels. With critical assessments of Toni and Slade Morrison’s The Big Box and The Book of Mean People, bell hooks’ Happy to Be Nappy, and Anne Schraff’s Until We Meet Again, among many other works, these provocative and fresh essays yield a wealth of perspectives on the intersections of identity formations in childhood and adulthood.
