Since the 1970s, when the dominance of military histories of the World Wars ended, and social historical histories of conflict rose to prominence, women have come to play an increasingly important role in mainstream stories about the Second World War. Although this is undeniably a valuable development, the perspectives on women that arose have in many respects remained limiting – although in new ways. Women have been portrayed as carers, as victims (notably of sexual violence), but rarely as agents of their own fate. This volume focuses on this last group. In spite of the undeniable suffering and victimization that befell so many women during the war, for others the war also opened opportunities and awakened ambitions. The articles in this volume, which cover both Europe and Asia, bring together some of the women who took initiatives, of which they sometimes suffered the dire consequences, sometimes enjoyed the fruits.

Behind the statistics of migration are the life stories of millions of migrants and their descendants. The movement of people out of China is one of the largest movements of humanity in modern times and large numbers of Chinese emigrated to the colony of the Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia. While many of them prospered in their new home, it was against a background of uncertainty and a feeling that they were not entirely welcome in their adopted homeland. BitterSweet is the poignant story of one Chinese family's life in Indonesia, and of their eventual emigration to Australia.

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed our activities, like teaching, researching, and socializing. We are confused because we haven’t experienced before. However, as Earth's smartest inhabitants, we can adapt new ways to survive the pandemic without losing enthusiasm. Therefore, even in pandemic conditions, we can still have scientific discussions, even virtually. The main theme of this symposium is "Reinforcement of the Sustainable Development Goals Post Pandemic" as a part of the masterplan of United Nations for sustainable development goals in 2030. This symposium is attended by 348 presenters from Indonesia, Malaysia, UK, Scotland, Thailand, Taiwan, Tanzania and Timor Leste which published 202 papers. Furthermore, we are delighted to introduce the proceedings of the 2nd Borobudur Symposium Borobudur on Humanities and Social Sciences 2020 (2nd BIS-HSS 2020). We hope our later discussion may result transfer of experiences and research findings from participants to others and from keynote speakers to participants. Also, we hope this event can create further research network.

The true-life adventure of a Western woman who found happiness in Bali, then stayed on in Indonesia to help in the struggle for freedom. The great-granddaughter of a witch from the Isle of Man, the adopted daughter of a Balinese rajah, hostess of one of the most glamorous hotels in the Far East, a prisoner of the Japanese for two horror-packed years and, as Surabaya Sue, an ardent supporter of the Indonesian revolution, K’tut Tantri is well acquainted with the unexpected. Adventure and courage run strong in her blood. It was in a Hollywood movie theater that she first discovered Bali and knew it for the place where she belonged. She had hoped to live and paint there quietly among the island’s simple people, but destiny, in the form of a stalled car and a delightful young prince, took a hand and revised her plans. She was formally adopted by the prince’s father, and...though she came to know the peasants of the Balinese kampongs, she knew also, and intimately, the life of a Balinese palace with all its ritual and tradition. This world lasted for only a few years. With war come the Japanese, presumably as deliverers overthrowing Dutch rule but in reality as tyrants. K’tut Tantri stayed on to join the underground movement agitating for Indonesian independence, and was eventually captured, imprisoned, tortured. Then with the end of hostilities she chose once again to ally herself with the Indonesians—this time in their resistance against the British and the returning Dutch. A friend of the leaders around Sukarno, she was instrumental in getting the Indonesian story to the outside world, and on several occasions she lent herself to enterprises requiring the combined talents of Mata Hari and T E. Lawrence. K’tut Tantri has an observant eye, an understanding knowledge, and she writes with spirit. Her story is a deeply moving personal drama and a vivid commentary on a period of crucial change in an ancient, romantic country.

The Indonesian Revolution (1945-1950) was the occasion by which Indonesia achieved political independence. But the way in which this common twentieth century event came about, in the general violence and exaltation of a true revolution, made it far more important than that. Like the Mexican, Russian, Chinese and Vietnamese revolutions, the Indonesian Revolution has been the central event in its country's whole modern history. For this reason, any addition to the small stock of good English-language writings on the Revolution, like Report from Banaran, is doubly welcome, not only for what it can tell us about the event itself but also for what it can tell us about the Indonesian condition in modern times. General Simatupang - a Christian Batak with a Dutch education who helped lead a guerrilla war in the Javanese countryside, a man who while still in his twenties was simultaneously one of the principal founders of the Indonesian army and one of the key figures in four years of diplomatic negotiations with the Dutch-is well qualified by background and experience for his subject. Two short periods stand out in the history of the Indonesian Revolution: its first great explosion between August 1945 and mid-1946, and its climax - which is the main subject of Report from Banaran-between December 1948 and July 1949. The first set its stamp on the whole. The sudden surrender of the Japanese on August 15, 1945 created an immediate vacuum of power which neither the British (acting for the victorious Allies), nor the Dutch, nor the Republic, hastily proclaimed on August 17, could possibly fill. Out of the void emerged the most powerful single force of the ensuing Revolution, a mass movement of pemuda (youths) caught up in a fervent Indonesian nationalism and committed to an uncompromising perdjuangan (struggle) for freedom. Absolute idealism led naturally to violence, first against Japanese posts and British occupying forces, then to a more general assault on social groups privileged under the old Netherlands Indies order: Chinese, Eurasians, Christian Ambonese, traditional elites, and village and clan leaders through most of Sumatra and Java. - John R.
