On 5th July 1984, Diego Armando Maradona arrived in Naples by helicopter, and for seven years all hell let loose in the Italian South. For so long the ailing giant that was SSC Napoli had criminally underachieved. Their fanatical support unequalled in both passion and size across Italy. None was more feared or hated. And how they ached for success. A history dramatic, explosive and tragic. Like the finest Italian operas. Then came Maradona Blessed with a ball at his feet on the field, cursed off it, the charismatic Argentine led Napoli to their first ever Title. It was the stuff of dreams. He was unplayable, then came the dark side. Maradona mixed openly with the city gangsters, Lo Camorra. He could do as he pleased whilst performing miracles on the pitch, but when the magic faded? Once upon a time in Naples attempts to chronicle those unforgettable times under Mount Vesuvius' shadow. When Diego left his inestimable mark on this Babylon by the sea. An alluring tale of wonderful football, of glory, despair and betrayal. Of corruption, gangsters and ultimately, redemption. In a city where the devil would have needed bodyguards, Maradona became bigger than God himself. A perfect storm: Welcome to Naples! The story so far: Since its original 2005 release Once upon a time in Naples has taken on a remarkable life of its own. Re-published in Spanish and Italian (and so nearly Arabic.) And the subject of much heated debate both online and off. Like Diego Maradona himself, it has divided opinions. No middle ground, it has always been loved or loathed and never ignored. But it is still standing and has finally arrived in an updated and revised edition. I have received so many emails off people reading this book in far off places. When you live in Chadderton, everywhere seems far off. The departure lounge of LA Airport. From a beach in Thailand. An African doctor engrossed whilst saving lives and working for the United Nations in the Congo. Also a Palestinian police officer who read the book in snatches whilst in the midst of Israeli Gunship attacks. And so many more. Then in 2011, when I finally thought it had died a slow, lingering, literary death, an email one Saturday night ignited an entirely new scenario. Paul Martin of EP productions contacted me with the idea of a documentary based on the book. Paul had me at 'Scarface in football boots!' So began the crazy and at times eerily world of all things Maradona. We have met and talked to characters not far removed from a Godfather movie. Recently the stakes have upped dramatically with the brilliant award winning SENNA director Asif Kapadia and Playmaker Films expressing an interest to be involved. Now as 2014 draws in all bets are off, and Once upon a time in Naples looks set to surprise even more. Just like Maradona, it refuses to go away. And long may it do so.

Once upon a time. It began on 5th July 1984. A most beautiful day in the Italian South. With 70,000 screaming Neapolitans awaiting him and roaring out his name in the San Paolo stadium, Diego Armando Maradona arrived under the shadow of Mount Vesuvius in Naples, and for seven years all hell was let loose. For so long the ailing giant SSC Napoli criminally underachieved. Their fanatical support unequalled in both passion and size across Italy. None had ever been more feared or hated, but how they ached for success. A history dramatic, explosive and so damned tragic. Like the finest Italian operas' it always ended in despair. Then came Maradona. Blessed with a ball at his feet on the field, hopelessly cursed off it. When in the mood unplayable, but then there was a dark side. He mixed openly with the city's most feared and notorious gangsters, the Camorra. The feared Giuliano clan. Untouchable, beyond reproach. A lifestyle fuelled by cocaine. A lawless idol with thorns so deep they pricked to make Maradona believe for a while he was a God. Scarface in football boots. Nothing less. When not enjoying the decadent excesses of this Babylon by the sea, there was magic to be made on the field as the charismatic Argentinian inspired Napoli to their first ever Scudetto title. It was the stuff of Neapolitan dreams and Northerner's nightmares. Juventus, the Milan clubs, all despised as they mocked this last major European city before Africa. 'Welcome to Italy'. 'Vesuvio wash them with lava', claimed the banners on any journey North. In revenge, Maradona, this barbarian king, led the southern hordes against those who viewed Naples lower than the dirt on the Italian boot. A revolution took place every Sunday for seven years with battles raging both on and off the field. As the Napoli tifosi fell in worship at his dancing feet, Maradona continued to party on unabated. Sheltered from all prying eyes until the magic faded and he was tossed out like garbage. Once Upon a Time in Naples attempts to chronicle this unforgettable era of when Diego left his inestimable mark on Italian football and Neapolitan's hearts. Whom he raised to the stars only to ultimately break them. An alluring tale of wonderful football, glory, despair, betrayal, corruption and then came a moment many years later of redemption. In a city that lived for the day and chanced their hand on the forever changing moods of Mount Vesuvius, Diego Maradona became bigger than God himself. From a high their patron San Gennaro kept a watching eye, but even he could not promise to bring about a happy ending. Miracles are one thing, Maradona another. For in this city where the devil feared to tread, even the angels had dirt under their wings. Welcome to Naples.... (Once Upon a Time in Naples is the basis for the Diego Maradona film directed by the Oscar winning Asif Kapadia and produced by Paul Martin and James Gay Rees.) @johnludds johnludds@gmail.com

'Once Upon a Time in Naples' attempts to piece together the events of a dramatic period in this troubled city's history, where, albeit for a short time only, SSC Napoli ruled the roost. With a ball at his feet Maradona could dance between the raindrops. It was a time like no other.

(The prequel to Once Upon a Time in Naples)The Journey... The rumours he was born under a star and delivered by the hand of god are not strictly true, but in the early hours of Sunday 30th October 1960, Diego Armando Maradona entered this world. Raised in the slums of Villa Fiorito, Buenos Aires, the word was out on Diego before he was even ten. Not so much a comet, more an eruption as the young boy they called El Pelusa, (The scraggly haired one), blazed through the Argentinos Juniors youth side Los Cebillitos, (the little onions), to make a first team debut at just fifteen. The Journey continued-the following year, Maradona was picked by the legendary coach Cesar Menotti to play for the national side. Argentina fell in love with the kid from the ghetto blessed with magical skills who could make the ball sing and do encores on request. Diego Maradona was a phenomenon. A move to his boyhood dream club Boca Juniors followed for an incredibly, incident-filled season-a championship won and the Barra Bravas say hello, before two explosive years at FC Barca, igniting the Camp Nou and containing enough controversy to fill a lifetime! Between, from the dust-bowl shacks of Villa Fiorito, to the Dodge city mansion in Pedralbes, Barcelona, a lifetime lived. Maradona, the Generals and the road to Naples, extraordinary. Then, a dark side. The French poet Charles Baudelaire once wrote, 'The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.' During the 1970's, Argentina was under the fascist, jackboot heel of a murderous military junta, the likes hardly witnessed since Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. This is the other side of the journey as we tell of the great footballing fix of Mundial 78, Colombian drug cartels, kidnappings, torture chambers, innocent people thrown from planes turning the waters of the River Plate blood red-The Mothers of the Disappeared, Los Desaparecidos. A rich, concoctions of heroes and villains. Never forgetting amidst the darkness on this journey, so much beauty too-back on the pitch, Kempes, Socrates, Passarella, Zico, Rossi and the man straight out of a Sergio Leone Spaghetti western. Claudio Gentile. Above all though, the kid born into poverty, who rose to become a footballing God to millions. Before there was ever, even talk of Once Upon a Time in Naples. Seven years under the volcano and utter mayhem! Ladies and gentlemen, enjoy the rollercoaster journey of Diego Armando Maradona!...@johnluddsjohnludds@gmail.com

(''A Naples Wall of Fire'' tells of the dramatic effect Diego Maradona's passing had on Naples and Buenos Aires. Using many tributes, a selection of updated stories from Once Upon a Time in Naples, and the heart-breaking events in both cities of the 25/26th November, hopefully this book does the great man justice.) ...Oh, what a circus.Naples. A city that for centuries, generations upon generations, mocked, derided and spat at with disdain by the rich north. Viewed as deservedly at the toe of Italy to be kicked and stamped upon. A place more African than European. Full of disease, pestilence, low morals and unholy. Where superstitions ruled. A pagan city. This was how Naples was viewed beyond the Mezzogiorno, (The Italian south). north of Rome. A strange concoction of truth and lies. Its inhabitants deemed unruly, allergic to paying taxes, disloyal to Rome, of central government, unwashed, cholera sufferers. There were songs and chants for Mount Vesuvio to put paid to the Neapolitans with lashing tongues of fire. Cleanse the south. ''Oh, what a stench! Even the dogs are running!''Then, came Diego...Maradona was Santa Maradonna, the Naples Patron saint San Gennaro became San Gennarmando! A fair swap they felt. He installed a pride and new found confidence. Redemption came with a beautiful day in May 1987, when Napoli won the Italian league for the first ever time. Maradona once stated, ''One could feel that it was forbidden for the south to win against the north.'' Not anymore. Now, thirty-four years later he is gone. Yet still his presence can be felt in all corner of Naples. The walls and steeped alleys filled with murals. His photograph in the window of every shop and cafe. Maradona could never die in this city, for like the pizza served up like nowhere else, a decent slice of his soul would be forever Neapolitan. As the dark skies of Naples filled with rockets and flares, and Buenos Aires erupted in tear gas explosions, rubber bullets, the sound of wailing sirens, the time had come to say adios to Diego Armando Maradona. They went crazy mourning all day and night.Sixty-years old may appear no age to vacate this mortal coil, but when you have lived a life such as Maradona, it is indeed way beyond extra-time. The kid from Villa Fiorito, who shone above the stars has finally joined them. He had his moments, he had some style. Oh, what a show!Gracias Diego...

Throughout early modern Europe, patronage became a means for the dominant classes to highlight their wealth, intellectual finesse, and cultural and political agendas, particularly within the court and religious institutions. Musical events like operas and carnival parades were an especially essential component of this patronage. However, the ways in which music patronage changed during the second half of the seventeenth century have largely remained underexplored. At the time, profound social and cultural transformations influenced the production and consumption of music in radical and permanent ways, not least through the influence of the Colonna family - Prince Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna and his wife Maria Mancini. Two of the most active patrons of seventeenth-century Italy, they were particularly active in the musical life of Rome. Through their sponsorship of an unprecedented number of operas, serenatas, and oratorios, they supported the careers of the most prominent composers, librettists, and musicians of the period. A new exploration of this period of music patronage, The Politics of Princely Entertainment follows Lorenzo Onofrio and Maria beyond the borders of Rome and through their far-reaching personal and institutional travels - to Venice, Naples, and the Kingdom of Aragon. Author Valeria De Lucca traces the journeys of not only scores and librettos, but also the singers, composers, and librettists whose art reached these distant corners of Europe through the Colonna family's patronage activities. The Politics of Princely Entertainment is a welcome addition to scholarly understanding of music patronage beyond traditional boundaries of gender, geography, and institutions.
