When Humans Become Migrants written by Marie-Bénédicte Dembour and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-26 with Law categories.

The treatment of migrants is one of the most challenging issues that human rights, as a political philosophy, faces today. It has increasingly become a contentious issue for many governments and international organizations around the world. The controversies surrounding immigration can lead to practices at odds with the ethical message embodied in the concept of human rights, and the notion of 'migrants' as a group which should be treated in a distinct manner. This book examines the way in which two institutions tasked with ensuring the protection of human rights, the European Court of Human Rights and Inter-American Court of Human Rights, treat claims lodged by migrants. It combines legal, sociological, and historical analysis to show that the two courts were the product of different backgrounds, which led to differing attitudes towards migrants in their founding texts, and that these differences were reinforced in their developing case law. The book assesses the case law of both courts in detail to argue that they approach migrant cases from fundamentally different perspectives. It asserts that the European Court of Human Rights treats migrants first as aliens, and then, but only as a second step in its reasoning, as human beings. By contrast, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights approaches migrants first as human beings, and secondly as foreigners (if they are). Dembour argues therefore that the Inter-American Court of Human Rights takes a fundamentally more human rights-driven approach to this issue. The book shows how these trends formed at the courts, and assesses whether their approaches have changed over time. It also assesses in detail the issue of the detention of irregular migrants. Ultimately it analyses whether the divergence in the case law of the two courts is likely to continue, or whether they could potentially adopt a more unified practice.

A rogue, a megalomaniac, a plodder, and a depressive: the men whose previously unpublished diaries are collected in this volume were four very different characters. But they had much in common too. All were from the Deep South. All were young, between seventeen and twenty-five. All had a connection to cotton and slaves. Most obviously, all were diarists, enduring night upon night of cramped hands and candle bugs to write out their lives. Down the furrows of their fathers' farms, through the thickets of their local woods, past the familiar haunts of their youth, Harry Dixon, Henry Hughes, John Coleman, and Henry Craft arrive at manhood via journeys they narrate themselves. All would be swept into the Confederate Army, and one would die in its service. But if their manhood was tested in the war, it was formed in the years before, when they emerged from their swimming holes, sopping with boyhood, determined to become princes among men. Few books exist about the inner lives of southern males, especially those in adolescence and early adulthood. Princes of Cotton begins to remedy this shortage. These diaries, along with Stephen Berry's introduction, address some of the central questions in the study of southern manhood: how masculine ideals in the Old South were constructed and maintained; how males of different ages and regions resisted, modified, or flouted those ideals; how those ideals could be expressed differently in public and private; and how the Civil War provoked a seismic shift in southern masculinity.

Fifteen Sermons Of Friedrich Schleiermacher Delivered To Celebrate The Beginning Of A New Year written by Friedrich Schleiermacher and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with New Year sermons categories.

Dr. Edwina Lawler has produced an accurate translation of 15 sermons delivered by Friedrich Schleiermacher to celebrate the beginning of a new year. She has also included translations of 4 sermons outlines. Of these, 12 are based upon New Testament and 7 upon Old Testament passages. Because these sermons were delivered over a 43-year period of time, one is able to get a glimpse of Schleiermacher at many stages along the way at a number of important historical junctures in German history, starting with the first New Year's Sermon in 1791when he was only a 22-year-old tutor in Schlobitten in East Prussia, until 1834 when, just a few weeks before his death at the age of 65, the master preacher and theologian Schleiermacher delivered his last sermon inaugurating the new year in Berlin. Lawler's translations are introduced by an analysis of his sermons within the framework of other writings dealing with similar themes: To Cecilia, On What Gives Value to Life, Soliloquies and Christmas Eve - a Dialogue. The New Year sermons are then analyzed according to the following themes: self-improvement; childlike trust in God; fear of the Lord; wisdom; love; the force of love; pleasing another; Christ as teacher; and the reign of God. This work is aimed not only at specialists but also at the more general reader by having translated all German in her introduction into English. She has provided detailed annotations throughout as well as an analytical index, which includes biblical references. This book should be useful to scholars and preachers for years to come.
