For all of its apparent simplicity—a few chords, twelve bars, and a supposedly straightforward American character—blues music is a complex phenomenon with cultural significance that has varied greatly across different historical contexts. One Sound, Two Worlds examines the development of the blues in East and West Germany, demonstrating the multiple ways social and political conditions can shape the meaning of music. Based on new archival research and conversations with key figures, this comparative study provides a cultural, historical, and musicological account of the blues and the impact of the genre not only in the two Germanys, but also in debates about the history of globalization.

What Is Everyone Talking About? Throughout my forty-five years of life, many people (family, friends, teachers, neighbors, co-workers, bosses, professionals, or others) have made verbal statements regarding how I act, respond, or think. Here is a wide variety of the most common among them: Susan, quit biting yourself! Susan, stop banging your head on the floor! Why are you hurting yourself? Stop flapping your hands in the airyou look like a fairy! Susan doesnt have any sense of pain. Put those shoulders down and stop rocking. Stop kicking your feet and carrying on this temper tantrum. Slow down! Lift up your chin and look at me, not out in space. Stop screaming! Stop yelling! Talk slower! Youre too loud! Stop your damn laughing; there is nothing funny about that. Susan is so sensitive about everything. Stop staring off somewhere and pay attention. Susan is nervous and jerkymostly jerky. Are you deaf? Answer me. Your thinking is backward. You are such a klutz. Why are you so clumsy? What did you do nowcrash? Stop spinning that radio; youre going to break it! Susan, will you stop spinning the dice and take your turn. Stop spinning the spinner; we want to play the game! Stop, Susan, youre going to ruin the record player, turning the turntable by hand! Sue, you talk about the same things over and over. Susie, we are tired of you asking us the same questions. We already answered it. No, the answer didnt change! Susan, get out of that room and socialize! Sue, why are you going on and on about the same thing? We are not even talking about that anymore. Susan is so damn stubborn. Why arent you emotionally sensitive to other people? Do you believe everything people say? You take things people say way too literally! You take things too seriously! You have no sense of humor! Nobody understands what the hell you are talking about! What is wrong with you? Susan, stop making that noise! Susan, will you shut up!!!! Listen to what I saidare you deaf? You are a blockhead! You are a half-wit! Why do you do the same things all the time? Why do you eat the same things all the time? Dont talk to Susan. She wont understand! Susan, we dont want to hear your problems! Will you stop organizing everything! Youre weird! Youre odd! Youre stupid! Youre a retard! Sue, you are so slow. Youre not getting it! Youre always lost; thats why I love you! God, youre so naive! Geez, youre a moron! Stop talking with your hands and tell me what you want! Close your mouth! You look like an idiot! Stop pinching! You are so exasperating! Youre crazy! What is Susan so upset about? Calm down! Youre a pain! Stop pointing at things and speak up if you want something! WellSusan, we thought you were possessed! You never did like change! Susan, you are going to have to adjust to change in order to survive! You are so task oriented. Do you do everything people tell you to do? Susie, do you remember everything people say? Susie, you have a remarkable memory! Youre like a computer! You need to be yourself; you are a chronic people pleaser! Dont touch her; she jumps! Comments like these or others would send an automatic wave of scrambling. The behaviors you want to change would become more intense, or an emotional outburst would follow. If you are displeased about us, then we are displeased with you but for different reasons. Ours are Why? You dont make sense to me. Your words hurt me. Your actions hurt me. Your tone of voice hurts me. Your facial expression (if we can make eye contact) scares me. Leave me alone! We may look at you with intense anger or wave our arms in a panicky motion. We may push things, kick, scream, bite, pinch, cry uncontrollably, or withdraw. Physical contact becomes unbearable. Remember, we are scrambled. The words used by others cause friction in our brain circuits

Two Worlds is a penetrating rethinking of that view. Drawing on local tribal knowledge as well as European accounts, Anne Salmond shows those first meetings in a new light. Both Maori and European protagonists were active, all fully human, following their own practical, political and mythological agendas, 'quite unlike those of their modern-day descendants in many ways'. The result is a work of trail-blazing significance in which many popular misconceptions and bigotries to do with common perceptions of traditional Maori society are revealed. It also opens up new possibilities in the international study of European exploration and 'discovery'.

In the two World Wars, hundreds of thousands of Indian sepoys were mobilized, recruited and shipped overseas to fight for the British Crown. The Indian Army was the chief Imperial reserve for an empire under threat. But how did those sepoys understand and explain their own war experiences and indeed themselves through that experience? How much did their testimonies realise and reflect their own fragmented identities as both colonial subjects and imperial policemen? The Testimonies of Indian Soldiers and the Two World Wars draws upon the accounts of Indian combatants to explore how they came to terms with the conflicts. In thematic chapters, Gajendra Singh traces the evolution of military identities under the British Raj and considers how those identities became embattled in the praxis of soldiers' war testimonies – chiefly letters, depositions and interrogations. It becomes a story of mutiny and obedience; of horror, loss and silence. This book tells that story and is an important contribution to histories of the British Empire, South Asia and the two World Wars.

Wanderers Between Two Worlds German Rebels in the American West, 1830-1860 by Douglas Hale In the 1830s a small band of visionary university students launched an audacious, but abortive, rebellion against the German Confederation in an effort to achieve unity and freedom for their country. Their bungled revolt was quickly crushed, and the idealistic youth found themselves branded as traitors and pursued as outlaws. "Wanderers Between Two Worlds" traces the extraordinary intertwined lives of seven of the German student revolutionaries who escaped imprisonment only by flight to the American West. Leaving behind a legacy in Germany's quest for freedom that would not be fulfilled for another 150 years, these urbane and educated exiles arrived in the United States in time to share in the most dramatic episodes of the age: wilderness adventures on the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails; the Texas Revolution against Mexico; the Mexican War; the California Gold Rush; the mounting conflict over slavery; and the inexorable thrust of American power to the Pacific. The United States offered these young men a broad and uncrowded stage upon which to display their talents. Gustav Koerner became a leading Illinois politician while Georg Engelmann emerged as the premier botanist of the American West. Ferdinand Lindheimer was an influential spokesman among the German settlers in Texas. Adolph Wislizenus explored the Rockies and northern Mexico and led in the establishment of the St. Louis scientific community. Gustav Bunsen perished in the Texas Revolution, while his brother Georg achieved considerable influence as a pioneer educator. Theodor Engelmann published the first German newspaper in Illinois. Historian Douglas Hale captures the drama and adventure of their lives in both the Old Country and the New. "Wanders Between Two Worlds" is an engaging and accessible saga that acquaints readers with a long-neglected chapter in the history of German democracy and the impact of German-Americans in the development of Illinois, Missouri, and Texas. Hale combines scrupulous attention to accuracy with a lucid and readable style that ventures beyond historical narrative to engage the reader in the personalities and experiences of the individuals involved.
