Is the world one or many? Ji Zhang revisits this ancient philosophical question from the modern perspective of comparative studies. His investigation stages an intellectual exchange between Plato, founder of the Academy, and Ge Hong, who systematized Daoist belief and praxis. Zhang not only captures the tension between rational Platonism and abstruse Daoism, but also creates a bridge between the two.

A sequel to Many in One, the volume One in Many portrays characters in a variety of situations, from playful to serious to deeply moving and boundlessly joyful. In place of Madhav taking different roles in the stories in the earlier volume, each of the stories in One in Many has a separate central character. Nearly all of them are made in the mould of Madhav,--humorous, witty, and serious,--and their differences melt away, just as the differences between people of different countries, nations, and religions do. It is, in fact, hard to describe the characters by their nationality. They may possess Indian names, but their nationality and citizenship are another matter. They have relatives and friends in both the continents and their identities transcend national geographical boundaries. The locale of the stories also lacks distinct unity; it extends from one hemisphere to the other, from Washington, DC, to Balgudi, a town in India not, however, to be found on a map. The focus of the stories is not what separates people, one from the other, but what binds them together, rather what can/ should bind them together.

A fascinating look at the "secret sauce" of leadership-learning to assist and give recognition to others while suspending your own need for creditWhether you're starting a new business or running a Fortune 100 firm, finding success as a leader requires a monumental shift in the way you approach your business and your employees. We are born thinking about "me"-it's a survival thing. But the leadership journey requires a shift from thinking first about ourselves to thinking first about others and their part in any effort in which we are involved. The Shift from One to Many helps you move into a leadership role with grace and ease by mastering three essential skills: facilitating the output of others, giving them recognition, and relinquishing your own need for praise in the process. On a four-stage journey through the leadership continuum, you'll learn how to Recognize and manage the self-interested mentality of the "Me" Stage in yourself and others Share credit in the "Us" Stage when working with or leading a team Facilitate the output of others and minimize the need for acknowledgment in the "Letting Go" Stage Focus exclusively on others and share your expertise without any desire for personal recognition in the "Giving Away the Gold" StageWith a wise and discerning approach to workplace relations, the author demonstrates how professional altruism can guide the trajectory of your career, helping you find greater satisfaction and success as a truly exceptional leader.

The standard view of the form-meaning interfaces, as embraced by the great majority of contemporary grammatical frameworks, consists in the assumption that meaning can be associated with grammatical form in a one-to-one correspondence. Under this view, composition is quite straightforward, involving concatenation of form, paired with functional application in meaning. In this book, we discuss linguistic phenomena across several grammatical sub-modules (morphology, syntax, semantics) that apparently pose a problem to the standard view, mapping out the potential for deviation from the ideal of one-to-one correspondences, and develop formal accounts of the range of phenomena. We argue that a constraint-based perspective is particularly apt to accommodate deviations from one-to-many correspondences, as it allows us to impose constraints on full structures (such as a complete word or the interpretation of a full sentence) instead of deriving such structures step by step. Most of the papers in this volume are formulated in a particular constraint-based grammar framework, Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar. The contributions investigate how the lexical and constructional aspects of this theory can be combined to provide an answer to this question across different linguistic sub-theories.

Far more than a riveting inside story of the creation of VISA—now the largest commercial enterprise on earth—One from Many is an absorbing story of personal and institutional transformation. Lyrical, profound, often humorous, it explores the ever-increasing change, complex societal problems, and failing institutions that confront us all. Dee Hock chronicles the emergence of a new form of organization that blends chaos and order, which may be critical to a livable future, and shows how it is emerging in such effective organizations as VISA, the Internet, World Weather Watch, and Alcoholics Anonymous. A beautiful blend of history, biography, and philosophy, One from Many not only challenges the way we think about organizations, management, and our relationship to the natural world, it's a rollicking fine story as well.

ORACLE 11G: SQL is an introduction to the fundamental SQL language used in all relational databases today. This textbook is not simply a study guide; it is written for those who have just a basic knowledge of databases and can be used in a course on this latest implementation of SQL from Oracle. Learning these concepts and techniques prepares students for the first exam in both the Oracle Database Administrator and Oracle Developer Certification Exam paths and offers a solid understanding of using Oracle 11g SQL effectively. The first part of ORACLE 11G: SQL focuses on creating database objects, including tables, constraints, indexes, sequences, synonyms, and users, and manipulating data. The second part explores data query techniques, such as row filtering, joins, single-row functions, aggregate functions, subqueries, and views. Several advanced query topics, such as ROLLUP, CUBE, and TOP-N analysis, are also introduced. To help students bridge these SQL topics to further studies, appendixes introduce SQL tuning, compare Oracle’s SQL syntax with other databases (MS SQL Server and MySQL), and explain how to embed SQL in applications (ASP.NET). An overview of the two Oracle connection interface tools, SQL Developer and SQL Plus, is also provided. The problem of the one and the many is central to ancient Greek philosophy, but surprisingly little attention has been paid to Aristotle's treatment of it in the Metaphysics. The Central Books of the Metaphysics are widely recognised as the most difficult portion of a most difficult work. This title aims to examine the Central Books.
