One Year in Alaska is a unique and peerless guide for traditional living in the Alaskan woods and will provide a wealth of valuable information for all who have dreamed of that life. It is a useful survival and tip guide for the vacationing outdoor hobbyist and the serious adventurer alike. It is substantive enough to save your life if stranded alone in the wild (although that is not its main purpose) and lighthearted enough to be a tour guide to the Alaskan out-of-doors. The information and instruction provided here is timeless and not dependent upon modern day technology although it does make use of certain practical conveniences that have come into existence since the Gold Rush days such as the chainsaw, Deet bug repellant, nylon tarps and visqueen, outboard motors, etc.... But nearly all the gear, food and techniques are indistinguishable from the forms used a hundred, and in some cases, even a thousand, years ago; not "For old Fashions Sake" rather because they proved to be un-improvable. To my mind nothing captures and conveys the spirit of the frontier in the bush more perfectly than an old school flat bottom riverboat, loaded to the thwarts, pushed by a small motor. No wheel or console just you and a tiller against the wind. Add some rain and a 600 mile two week journey ahead of you and you are as close to the old world as you will ever be. The spirit of Old Alaska can't be found in a particular place simply by being there, rather it is a state of mind and a particular set of values and beliefs. It is a way of seeing things, not a way of dressing or intentionally depriving yourself of pleasure and conveniences. It's about minimizing your attachment and dependence upon the outside world and maximizing your self-sufficiency while being as comfortable as you can make yourself with simple things. It's not about self-denial - far from it - it's more about a form of self-indulgence and pursuing a certain kind of happiness: to live a life that nurtures a part of the soul that longs for independence and personal liberty.

Cold Hands Warm Heart written by Marilyn Moore Shaver and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-24 with Country life categories.

Ms. Shaver, with her husband and children, spent ten years in the Alaskan bush where they lived a simple but satisfying lifestyle with all the attendant challenges and adventures. She and her family lived in the Interior of Alaska where winter temperatures can drop as low as -60 degrees or more and stay there for weeks on end. The summers are three months long, and everything must be done during that short season to prepare for the following winter. She tells of encounters with bears, surviving spring floods, and setting her husband's broken leg while looking at a first-aid book. Her desire to learn the skills of bush life led her to tan moose hides, catch fish in nets, snare rabbits for dinner, and much more, most of which was learned through trial and error. The average contact with others was about every three months when a friend might fly out to visit and maybe bring mail. Loneliness was never a problem, says the author, but it was exciting to see someone after a long stretch of isolation.Growing up near Boston, Massachusetts, hardly prepared Ms. Shaver for such a rough and primitive life, but her love of nature and her interest in learning all she could about this back-to-basics way of life come through in the pages of her book. She tells her story just as it happened and includes journal entries she made at the time.

Cathy Carr’s 365 Days to Alaska is a charming debut middle-grade novel about a girl from off-the-grid Alaska adjusting to suburban life. Eleven-year-old Rigel Harman loves her life in off-the-grid Alaska. She hunts rabbits, takes correspondence classes through the mail, and plays dominoes with her family in their two-room cabin. She doesn’t mind not having electricity or running water—instead, she’s got tall trees, fresh streams, and endless sky. But then her parents divorce, and Rigel and her sisters have to move with their mom to the Connecticut suburbs to live with a grandmother they’ve never met. Rigel hates it in Connecticut. It’s noisy, and crowded, and there’s no real nature. Her only hope is a secret pact that she made with her father: If she can stick it out in Connecticut for one year, he’ll bring her back home. At first, surviving the year feels impossible. Middle school is nothing like the wilderness, and she doesn’t connect with anyone . . . until she befriends a crow living behind her school. And if this wild creature has made a life for itself in the suburbs, then, just maybe, Rigel can too. 365 Days to Alaska is a wise and funny debut novel about finding beauty, hope, and connection in the world no matter where you are—even Connecticut. “Rigel’s big heart made my own heart ache. A funny and poignant fish-out-of-water tale with all the right feels and an important reflection on how we can all find our way home.” —John David Anderson, author of Ms. Bixby’s Last Day “Rigel’s suspenseful journey toward finding a home for her brave and wild heart is one that will help us all discover the beauty and uniqueness of where we are.” —Francisco X. Stork, author of Marcelo in the Real World “Readers will want to travel alongside Rigel as she struggles to survive the halls of middle school as well as she did the Alaskan bush. 365 Days to Alaska is a wonderful debut novel about compassion, belonging, and finding your way home when you feel lost in the wilderness.” —Lynne Kelly, author of Song for a Whale “Cathy Carr’s debut is a poignant novel about family and truth, particularly the uncomfortable truths between fathers and daughters, told in a voice full of insight, love, and humor. She’s an author to watch, full of wisdom and exquisite heart.” —Carrie Jones, NYT bestselling author of the Need and Time Stoppers series “Rigel Harman isn’t just any outsider—she’s an Alaskan Bush outsider. Carr’s empathic and outstanding debut novel will move readers of all ages, creating internal acceptance not only for Rigel but also for ourselves.” —Bethany Hegedus, author of Grandfather Gandhi

I will always have a love for my birthplace, the Minnesota River Valley, but a new land of adventure was beckoning me. I was not interested in renting or owning a small portion of property, and that was all I could afford in Minnesota. I saw the last frontier on Earth, Alaska, and knew I could make a new life there. With having the freedom to breathe, to make a new life free from restrictions of movement. To feel like I was no longer tethered. The year was 1984, I had to take the first steps in making my dreamland come true. I had to find the piece of land I wanted to own and live on, so that I could stake my claim. One day, a friend informed me that there were two federal land areas open for homesteading. The very next day, I found my way into the federal land office in Anchorage, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). I told the woman working at the reception desk that I was interested in learning more about claiming a federal homestead. I picked up every folder, brochure, and form they had pertaining to filing for a homestead. The next year, after careful planning and preparation, I set out with my son Dan to start the journey of securing my dreams of the future. Alaska Wilderness Adventure documents the first step of my lifelong journey. It is a true story of survival-ism, the trials and errors we faced in the extreme wilderness, and our triumph over mastering our goals. There were many laughs, and many moments of uncertainty, but in the end, it was a successful piece of history.

Into the Wild meets Helter Skelter in this riveting true story of a modern-day homesteading family in the deepest reaches of the Alaskan wilderness—and of the chilling secrets of its maniacal, spellbinding patriarch. When Papa Pilgrim, his wife, and their fifteen children appeared in the Alaska frontier outpost of McCarthy, their new neighbors saw them as a shining example of the homespun Christian ideal. But behind the family's proud piety and beautiful old-timey music lay Pilgrim's dark past: his strange connection to the Kennedy assassination and a trail of chaos and anguish that followed him from Dallas and New Mexico. Pilgrim soon sparked a tense confrontation with the National Park Service fiercely dividing the community over where a citizen’s rights end and the government’s power begins. As the battle grew more intense, the turmoil in his brood made it increasingly difficult to tell whether his children were messianic followers or hostages in desperate need of rescue. In this powerful piece of Americana, written with uncommon grace and high drama, veteran Alaska journalist, Tom Kizzia uses his unparalleled access to capture an era-defining clash between environmentalists and pioneers ignited by a mesmerizing sociopath who held a town and a family captive.

Becoming Frozen written by Jill Homer and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-12 with categories.

Jill Homer was just another naive young woman who followed a man to the Last Frontier - but it was Alaska that won her heart. This memoir is a love story about the wonderful, humorous, and sometimes harrowing experiences that await when a woman throws her heart to the wind just to see where it lands. After taking a job at a weekly newspaper in Homer, Alaska, Jill and her partner forge a new life in a town where artists and sport fishermen drive the local economy, grizzly bears roam through back yards, social outings feature death-defying ski trips or kayaking rough seas in freezing rain, and business attire means wearing three sweaters to an unheated office. As Jill adapts to Homer's idiosyncrasies, she finds her own quirky hobby - riding a bike on snow. Despite having little in the way of an athletic background or talent, Jill signs up for a hundred-mile race across frozen wilderness. As the harsh Alaskan winter sets in, she launches a tenacious training routine that takes her far out of her comfort zone. Here, under the Northern Lights, battling exhaustion and extreme cold, Jill discovers the heart of Alaska. And there's no going back.

Guy Grieve's life was going nowhere - trapped in a job he hated, commuting 2,000 miles a month and up to his neck in debt. But he dreamed of escaping it all to live alone in one of the wildest, most remote places on earth - Alaska. And just when he'd given up hope, the dream came true. Suddenly Guy was thrown into one of the harshest environments in the world, miles from the nearest human being and armed with only the most basic equipment. And he soon found - whether building a log cabin from scratch, hunting, ice fishing or of course dodging bears in the buff - that life in the wilderness was anything but easy... Part Ray Mears, part Bill Bryson, CALL OF THE WILD is the gripping story of how a mild-mannered commuter struggled with the elements - and himself - and eventually learned the ways of the wild.
