The author offers a comprehensive portrait of online news performance in Western countries in changing media environments. Drawing on a content analysis of 48 news outlets from different types of media organization in France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Switzerland, and USA, Edda Humprecht investigates the complex interplay of systemic and organizational dynamics and their impact on online news content, showing that the performance of online news media strongly varies among different media outlets. Less profit oriented outlets and those with a focus on information generally perform well offering hard news, diversity, critical distance, or analytical depth. This suggests that the divide between high and low-performing outlets is tied to the news outlet's capacity and willingness to strike a balance between their profit orientation and their normative role as information providers. Furthermore, the findings demonstrate that different dimensions of news performance are more pronounced in certain countries. This book provides new theoretical perspectives and methods for political and media scholars, and insights for journalists, policymakers, and concerned citizens.

An analysis of divergent online news preferences of journalists and consumers and what this means for media and democracy in the digital age. The websites of major media organizations—CNN, USA Today, the Guardian, and others—provide the public with much of the online news they consume. But although a large proportion of the top stories these sites disseminate cover politics, international relations, and economics, users of these sites show a preference (as evidenced by the most viewed stories) for news about sports, crime, entertainment, and weather. In this book, Pablo Boczkowski and Eugenia Mitchelstein examine the divergence in preferences and consider its implications for the media industry and democratic life in the digital age. Drawing on analyses of more than 50,000 stories posted on twenty news sites in seven countries in North and South America and Western Europe, Boczkowski and Mitchelstein find that the gap in news preferences exists regardless of ideological orientation or national media culture, and that it is not affected by innovations in forms of storytelling, such as blogs and user-generated content on mainstream news sites. Drawing upon these findings, they explore the news gap's troubling consequences for the matrix that connects communication, technology, and politics in the digital age.

From the Introduction: The days of relying on the newspaper delivery boy to deliver information to households are long over. The Internet and mobile phone technologies have changed how information is gathered and delivered in ways that can't be overstated. They have allowed people worldwide to gather, share, and access news as it's happening. The Internet and sites such as Facebook and YouTube have made it possible for anyone to reach a broad, global audience and for anyone with a computer to be a news provider. There is an enormous amount of content available online, on just about any topic. Viewers and readers must weed through this information to find sources that they trust and that they can rely on, in the same way that people read their daily paper or watch their favorite television news broadcast. The difference is the people who write for newspapers or television news are journalists-people whose job it is to research and deliver news to the public. When you go online, you find content from lots of different people, many of whom are not actual journalists, but interested citizens who want to share information with the public, much like journalists do. These non-journalists include writers of blogs and producers of independent news stories-people who are not working for official media outlets like established news channels or publications. Here, we will look at the differences between journalists and this new breed of news providers. We will discuss what professional standards journalists must follow that bloggers are not bound to, as well as what laws protect journalists but do not offer the same protection for non-journalists. Also discussed will be the roles different types of news providers serve in society, and how our definition of journalism is changing. The purpose is to help consumers of online news better understand where the news they read is coming from, what news they can trust, how to tell the difference between fact and opinion, and how to put together everything they read to form their own ideas about current events-and then perhaps even to share their ideas in their own online publications or blogs.

This book argues that there are constant formations of online public spheres in present-day China, prompted by never-ending news. It contends that these publics are chronic, although individually they are usually transient. They are networked, which enables them to go viral in hours, and they may engender unexpected consequences. These features explain why online public spheres survive in China even though censorship and information manipulation are pervasively and strategically maneuvered to guide or manufacture “public opinion”. The book also proposes that there are deeply entangled structural factors bolstering China's online news-prompted public spheres: the continuous flow of news information, the countless public spaces facilitated by China’s digital infrastructure and the rise of rights-conscious netizens. Pushing forward a new way of conceptualizing the idea of public spheres, this book contends clearly that public spheres are most often sparked by chronic news in today's media-saturated societies. Delving into the life cycles of public spheres, it goes beyond static analysis of individual public spheres and instead studies their five qualities, which, except for the networked quality, have never been systematically addressed in scholarship.
