Nowadays, there is an increasing recognition of the value of knowledge management in the construction projects and ontology-based semantic modelling is seen as an important means of addressing this problem, even if a knowledge-base which maps the construction planning and scheduling domains, in a formal and machine-readable way, is still missing. Addressing this issue, the book is divided in two parts. Part I, theory, is a theoretical introduction of on ontologies concepts and expert systems. Part II, application, presents a research of ontologies development for semantic modelling of construction scheduling, workspace, product and time domains. The last chapter presents the architecture of an ontology-based expert system, to show how ontologies can support automated planning mechanisms.

Ontologies are increasingly recognized as essential tools in information science. Although the concepts are well understood theoretically , the practical implementation of ontologies remains challenging. In this book, researchers in computer science, information systems, ontology engineering, urban planning and design, civil and building engineering, and architecture present an interdisciplinary study of ontology engineering and its application in urban development projects. The first part of the book introduces the general notion of ontology, describing variations in abstraction level, coverage, and formality. It also discusses the use of ontologies to achieve interoperability, and to represent multiple points of view and multilingualism. This is illustrated with examples from the urban domain. The second part is specific to urban development. It covers spatial and geographical knowledge representation, the creation of urban ontologies from various knowledge sources, the interconnection of urban models and the interaction between standards and domain models. The third part presents case studies of the development of ontologies for urban mobility, urban morphological processes, road systems, and cultural heritage. Other cases report on the use of ontologies to solve urban development problems, in construction business models, building regulations and urban regeneration. It concludes with a discussion of key challenges for the future deployment of ontologies in this domain. This book bridges the gap between urban practitioners and computer scientists. As the essence of most urban projects lies in making connections between worldviews, ontology development has an important role to play, in promoting interoperability between data sources, both formal (urban databases, Building Integrated Models, Geographical Information Systems etc.) and less formal (thesauri, text records, web sources etc.). This volume offers a comprehensive introduction to ontology engineering for urban development. It is essential reading for practitioners and ontology designers working in urban development.

The Semantic Web combines the descriptive languages RDF (Resource Description Framework) and OWL (Web Ontology Language), with the data-centric, customizable XML (eXtensible Mark-up Language) to provide descriptions of the content of Web documents. These machine-interpretable descriptions allow more intelligent software systems to be written, automating the analysis and exploitation of web-based information. Software agents will be able to create automatically new services from already published services, with potentially huge implications for models of e-Business. Semantic Web Technologies provides a comprehensive overview of key semantic knowledge technologies and research. The authors explain (semi-)automatic ontology generation and metadata extraction in depth, along with ontology management and mediation. Further chapters examine how Semantic Web technology is being applied in knowledge management (“Semantic Information Access”) and in the next generation of Web services. Semantic Web Technologies: Provides a comprehensive exposition of the state-of-the art in Semantic Web research and key technologies. Explains the use of ontologies and metadata to achieve machine-interpretability. Describes methods for ontology learning and metadata generation. Discusses ontology management and evolution, covering ontology change detection and propagation, ontology dependency and mediation. Illustrates the theoretical concepts with three case studies on industrial applications in digital libraries, the legal sector and the telecommunication industry. Graduate and advanced undergraduate students, academic and industrial researchers in the field will all find Semantic Web Technologies an essential guide to the technologies of the Semantic Web.

Knowledge is one of the most valuable assets. The harnessing and use of knowledge is the cornerstone of modern sustainable construction. Due to the growing number and conflicting interests of stakeholders, the increasing demands for context sensitive solutions and sustainable development, and the fast-growing complexities of interdependencies, coupled with the emerging opportunities of process-based collaboration and knowledge sharing; there is a need for process and knowledge-based collaboration between project stakeholders. Knowledge-based collaborative development aims at integrating the work processes across various stakeholders, disciplines, and projects to assure consistency in design, coordinated construction, consideration of sustainability, and better handling of interdependencies. Web-based collaborative tools (such as workflow automation tools) are means of supporting process-centered collaboration. However, existing tools have not fully addressed the challenges of domain-wide knowledge-based integration. Most of these tools are founded on semantically-poor, proprietary-based, and static models. Such models are not suitable for representing the diverse and dynamic domain knowledge. In this regard, ontologies have emerged to facilitate the modelling of knowledge. An ontology is a common vocabulary of terms, definitions, and interrelationships with explicitly defined and machine-understandable semantics. However, the development of a single ontology to serve the whole domain is not feasible given the multidisciplinary parties that are involved. The development of ontology merging techniques, therefore, becomes an essential component of semantic systems. Ontology merging is the process of deriving a new ontology based on two or more existing ontologies in order to facilitate ontology interoperability. This research developed a knowledge-based collaborative portal for supporting enhanced communication, coordination, and collaboration among various disciplines and stakeholders within the infrastructure and construction domain. The portal is founded on two main pillars: a domain process ontology for facilitating semantic process representation, and an ontology merger for allowing knowledge-based process integration. The portal aims at offering an efficient value-adding collaboration platform through multi-dimensional process integration for producing a common workflow that goes beyond listing of processes to a knowledge-enabled view. The ultimate goal is to support integrated coordinated decision-making in an efficient manner, leading to an enhancement in the construction business performance in terms of time, cost, quality, safety, and sustainability.

th This volume contains the papers presented at the 13 International Conference on Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management (EKAW 2002) held in Sig enza, Spain, October 1-4, 2002. Papers were invited on topics related to Knowledge Acquisition, Knowledge Management, Ontologies, and the Semantic Web. A total of 110 papers were submitted. Each submission was evaluated by at least two reviewers. The selection process has resulted in the acceptance of 20 long and 14 short papers for publication and presentation at the conference; an acceptance rate of about 30%. In addition, one invited paper by a keynote speaker is included. This volume contains 8 papers on Knowledge Acquisition, 4 about Knowledge Management, 16 on Ontologies, and 6 papers about the Semantic Web. This was the second time (EKAW 2000 being the first) that the event was organized as a conference rather than as the usual workshop (hence the acronym: European Knowledge Acquisition Workshop). The large number of submissions (110 versus the usual 40-60) is an indication that the scientific community values EKAW as an important event to share experiences in the Knowledge Technology area, worthy of being organized as a prestigious international conference. Knowledge is the fuel of the upcoming Knowledge Economy. Therefore, we believe that conferences such as EKAW, that focus on Knowledge Technologies, will continue to play a major role as a platform for sharing and exchanging experiences and knowledge between key players in the area.
