Het concept van de lerende regio kan worden benut om de vervolgstappen voor de ontwikkeling van Greenport Venlo te benoemen. Het concept betekent voor betrokken partijen en personen een nieuwe wijze van samenwerken en kennisontwikkeling binnen regionale ontwikkelingsprocessen.

Kinderen gaan naar school om te leren, en leren gebeurt met de hersenen. In de tijd dat kinderen naar school gaan, ondergaan hun hersenen nog grote veranderingen. Daarom zijn de neurowetenschappen (de studie van de hersenen) en onderwijs nauw met elkaar verbonden. Leren is alleen mogelijk omdat de hersenen plastisch zijn: plasticiteit verwijst naar het vermogen van de hersenen om hun structuur te reorganiseren en daardoor functie en gedrag te veranderen. Maar wat verandert er precies in de hersenen als we iets nieuws leren? Wat zijn de optimale omstandigheden voor de hersenen om te leren? En waarom vergeten we ook dingen? Welke ontwikkelingsveranderingen treden op in de hersenen tijdens de kindertijd en de adolescentie, en hoe zijn deze gelijk of verschillend vergeleken met de neurale mechanismen van leren en geheugen? Neuro-imaging onderzoek, of “hersenscanning”, heeft ons huidige inzicht in de ontwikkeling van de hersenen, leren, geheugen en andere schoolgerelateerde vaardigheden zoals lezen en rekenen vergroot, en heeft ook de kennis vergaring betreffende creativiteit, metacognitie en leer-gerelateerde emoties en angsten versneld. Maar wat meten deze hersenscantechnieken eigenlijk? Wat voor vragen kunnen we met neuro-imaging beantwoorden, en wat zijn de beperkingen? In deze Collectie wordt een toegankelijk overzicht gegeven van de huidige inzichten in de mechanismen van hersenontwikkeling, leren en geheugen. De artikelen zullen kinderen helpen begrijpen hoe hun hersenen leren en zich ontwikkelen, en hoe deze processen worden gevormd door hun omgeving en hun eigen inspanningen.
