The sole survivors of the human race... and their time is running out. In the wake of Earth’s fall, Peter Alander has just one choice: to use the alien Gifts left behind on his distant colony world to warn other missions of their impending demise, a second wave of alien ships, this time intent on destroying everything in their path. Without the Gifts, humanity would have no hope at all--although no one truly understands them, and it is becoming increasingly certain that the very use of them is what draws the enemy on. Out of the dark comes help from an entirely unexpected quarter. Peter Alander and his fellow survivors are not the only victims of the terrible Starfish. But what if the cost of that help is too high? What if the price is humanity itself? “This book shines” —Cinescape “High adventure in deep space for fans of far-future SF.” —Library Journal Nominated for the Aurealis and Ditmar Awards.

In Archer Mayor's intriguing new Vermont-based mystery, The Orphan's Guilt, a straightforward traffic stop snowballs into a homicide investigation after Joe Gunther and his fellow investigators peel back layer upon layer of history and personal heartbreak to learn a decades-old hidden truth. John Rust is arrested for drunk driving by a Vermont state trooper. Looking to find mitigating circumstances, John’s lawyer hires private eye Sally Kravitz to look into the recent death of John’s younger brother, purportedly from a childhood brain injury years earlier. But what was the nature of that injury, and might its mechanism point more to murder than to natural causes? That debate brings in Joe Gunther and his team. Gunther’s efforts quickly uncover an ancient tale of avarice, betrayal, and vengeance that swirled around the Rust boys growing up. Their parents and the people they consorted with—forgotten, relentless, but now jolted to action by this simple set of circumstances—emerge with a destructive passion. All while the presumably innocent John Rust mysteriously vanishes with no explanation.

When I got to the post-office to-day and found there was no letter from you, my heart sank right through the bottom of my number seven boots and buried itself in the mud under the doorsill. All day long I had had a feeling that there would be a letter, and that hope kept me up nobly through the trying ordeal of attempting to teach spelling and geography and arithmetic to a roomful of children of assorted ages who seem as determined not to learn as I am determined to teach them. It sustained and soothed me through the exciting process of "settling" Absalom Butts, the fourteen-year-old bully of the class, with whom I have a preliminary skirmish every day in the week before recitations can begin; and through the equally trying business of listening to his dull-witted sister, Clarissa, spell "example" forty ways but the right way, and then dissolve into inevitable tears. When school was out I was as limp as a rag, and so thankful it was Friday night that I could have kissed the calendar. I fairly "sic"ed Sandhelo along the road to the post-office, expecting to revel in the bale of news from my belovéds that was awaiting me, but when I got there and the post box was bare the last button burst off the mantle of my philosophy and left me naked to the cold winds of disappointment. A whole orphan asylum with the mumps on both sides would have been gay and chipper compared to me when I turned Sandhelo's head homeward and started on the six-mile drive.

A great black cube glides just above the tenuous upper atmosphere of a planet blessed with green lands surrounded by blue oceans. This cube is blacker than black. It resembles a moving hole. But it is not empty. Within this wonderful vessel is a visitor from a distant star, Lord Bright-wing, explorer of many worlds and representative of the People, a civilization hundreds of thousands of years old. Bright-wing controls the awesome power of his craft through his servant, an artificial intelligence of vast intellect. But advanced and powerful as creature and machine might be, Bright-wing will shortly face a challenge none of the People had ever faced and indeed had taken every precaution to avoid. But the unintended consequences of Lord Bright-wing’s actions trickle down through millennia to bring into existence an evil organization calling itself Wings between the Worlds. This group of cold-hearted men and women seeks to use the almost unlimited power that has fallen into its hands to dominate the world. But just as the leadership of Wings between the Worlds is on the verge of executing their well-laid plans, one of their own orphan slaves, a young girl, meets Adam Jones, a boy from a well-respected spacefaring family. And together they accept a lonely mission to free the remaining orphans and travel the solar system to destroy the power of Wings. And it must be done in secret; not even Adam’s parents can know. If these two young people fail, they will simply disappear, never to be seen or heard from again, their love and sacrifice wasted and unappreciated.
