Interoperability has been a requirement in NATO ever since the Alliance came into being - an obvious requirement when 16 independent Nations agree to allocate national resources for the achievement of a common goal: to maintain peace. With the appearance of data processing in the command and control pro cess of the armed forces, the requirement for interoperability expanded into the data processing field. Although problems of procedural and operational interoperability had been constantly resolved to some extent as they arose over the years, the introduction of data proces sing increased the problems of technical interoperability. The increase was partially due to the natural desire of nations to support their own national industries. But it was definetely also due to the lack of time and resources needed to solve the problems. During the mid- and late -1970s the International Standards Organisa tion (ISO) decided to develop a concept ("model") which would allow "systems" to intercommunicate. The famous ISO 7-layer model for Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) was born. The OSI model was adopted by NATO in 1983 as thi basis for standardization of data communications in NATO. The very successful (first) Symposium on Interoperability of ADP Sys tems, held in November 1982 at the SHAPE Technical Centre (STC), gave an exten~ive overview of the work carried out on the lower layers of the model and revealed some intriguing ideas about the upper layers. The first Symposium accurately reflected the state-of-the-art at that point in time.

This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the OSI upper layer standards and practices, from problem definition to migration and implementation. It defines interconnection, identifies a recipe for uniform solutions and explains the details of how the standards are used to realize solutions. There is also coverage of the generic construction of all OSI-based applications and the use of tools and techniques such as ASN.1, ROS and object-oriented design.

OSI is basically a set of technical standards that provide a basis for data communications, such that computers from a multitude of different manufacturers can share data, and even applications, with one another. This reference, for those who are, or expect to be, dealing with OSI issues on a daily basis, explicates the "real world" technical and business issues surrounding the implementation of the OSI model. OSI IN THE VOICE ENVIRONMENT HERE’S STRAIGHTFORWARD EXPLANATIONS OF THE OSI LAYERS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO TELECOM SERVICE AND EQUIPMENT. WHETHER YOU NEED ANWERS ON HARDWARE, SOFTWARE, ERROR CONTROL OR INTERFACES, LOOK INSIDE FOR BASIC FACTS AND HOW TO MANAGE THOSE CRITICAL “SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES” The OSI (Open System Interconnection) Reference Model is a cornerstone of modern network design. Although the OSI model has become almost synonymous with data communications, it serves the public switched telephone network (PSTN) as well and is a productive way to organize and teach the building blocks of telecom systems. In OSI Reference Model for Telecommunications, hands-on expert Debbra Wetteroth provides telecom staffers the information they need to gain a working knowledge of this essential telecom service architecture and equipment. Her style that breaks down the barriers between data and voice vocabularies. This quick reference to the OSI model puts the data you need everyday at your fingertips. Look inside for an understandable schematics of: * Mapping PSTN functions to OSI * The basics of successful data transmissions * What OSI is and does * The components that make up OSI * OSI “common knowledge” (the kind that’s not always so common), such as numbering system, signaling rates, and noise distortion data * A detailed description of Layers 1 to 3 and a thorough review of the Transport Layer. For each layer, you’ll learn roles, functions, definitions, and more This unique volume will prove invaluable to telecommunications technicians, field supervisors, switch managers, network analysts, network designers, and anyone else who needs detailed explanation of the many components of OSI.
