From teen dating to public displays of affection, from the "fishing girls" and "big moneys" that wander discos in search of romance to the changing shape of sex in the Chinese city, this is a book like no other. James Farrer immerses himself in the vibrant nightlife of Shanghai, draws on individual and group interviews with Chinese youth, as well as recent changes in popular media, and considers how sexual culture has changed in China since its shift to a more market-based economy. More and more men and women in China these days are having sex before marriage, creating a new youth sex culture based on romance, leisure, and free choice. The Chinese themselves describe these changes as an "opening up" in response to foreign influences and increased Westernization. Farrer explores these changes by tracing the basic elements in talk about sex and sexuality in Shanghai. He then shows how Chinese youth act out the sometimes-contradictory meanings of sex in the new market society. For Farrer, sexuality is a lens through which we can see how China imagines and understands itself in the wake of increased globalization. Through personal storytelling, neighborhood gossip, and games of seduction, young men and women in Shanghai balance pragmatism with romance, lust with love, and seriousness with play, collectively constructing and individually coping with a new culture based on market principles. With its provocative glimpse into the sex lives of young Chinese, then, Opening Up offers something even greater: a thoughtful consideration of China as it continues to develop into an economic superpower.

Experts discuss the potential for open education tools, resources, and knowledge to transform the economics and ecology of education. Given the abundance of open education initiatives that aim to make educational assets freely available online, the time seems ripe to explore the potential of open education to transform the economics and ecology of education. Despite the diversity of tools and resources already available—from well-packaged course materials to simple games, for students, self-learners, faculty, and educational institutions—we have yet to take full advantage of shared knowledge about how these are being used, what local innovations are emerging, and how to learn from and build on the experiences of others. Opening Up Education argues that we must develop not only the technical capability but also the intellectual capacity for transforming tacit pedagogical knowledge into commonly usable and visible knowledge: by providing incentives for faculty to use (and contribute to) open education goods, and by looking beyond institutional boundaries to connect a variety of settings and open source entrepreneurs. These essays by leaders in open education describe successes, challenges, and opportunies they have found in a range of open education initiatives. They approach—from both macro and micro perspectives—the central question of how open education tools, resources, and knowledge can improve the quality of education. The contributors (from leading foundations, academic institutions, associations, and projects) discuss the strategic underpinnings of their efforts first in terms of technology, then content, and finally knowledge. They also address the impact of their projects, and how close they come to achieving a vision of sustainable, transformative educational opportunities that amounts to much more than pervasive technology. As a province of our country, how does Guangdong support the idea of working together to build a human community with a shared future? It is a question worthy of our deep thinking. The guiding opinions came at a time when General Secretary Xi’s important instructions for Guangdong’s work. General secretary Xi Jinping asked Guangdong to take the lead in the four areas. It undoubtedly pointed out the direction for Guangdong to continue to play an important role in the construction of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Only in this way can we make due contributions to the cause of Reform and Opening up, and then to the cause of Working Together to Build a Human Community with A Shared Future. The original aspiration of Working Together to Build a Human Community with A Shared Future lies in the pursuit of peace and development, which is the common aspiration of all mankind for more than 100 years. Xi Jinping said, “We should draw on the lessons of history. Historian told us long ago that rapid economic development makes social reform inevitable; but people tend to support the former while resisting the latter”. In this process, China has been in the forefront of the world in many areas. This kind of courage, boldness and achievement in the forefront of the world is not only reflected in the proposition of working together to build a human community with a shared future, but also in the national economic strength, scientific and technological progress, cultural soft power and other fields that support this great cause.
