Brecht at the Opera looks at the German playwright's lifelong ambivalent engagement with opera. An ardent opera lover in his youth, Brecht later denounced the genre as decadent and irrelevant to modern society even as he continued to work on opera projects throughout his career. He completed three operas and attempted two dozen more with composers such as Kurt Weill, Paul Hindemith, Hanns Eisler, and Paul Dessau. Joy H. Calico argues that Brecht's simultaneous work on opera and Lehrstück in the 1920s generated the new concept of audience experience that would come to define epic theater, and that his revisions to the theory of Gestus in the mid-1930s are reminiscent of nineteenth-century opera performance practices of mimesis.

Ernst Krenek has been described as a “one-man history of twentieth-century music.” His vast compositional output encompasses many of its extremes and expresses many of its contradictions. Few have attempted, however, to contextualize Krenek’s compositional output because our understanding of classical music in the first half of the twentieth century still largely remains focused on the music of a few canonical figures. Im ästhetischen Anspruch der komplexesten aller europäischen Kunstgattungen steckte stets auch eine darüber hinausgehende politik- und gesellschaftskritische Ambition, aus der sich ganz wesentlich das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen denjenigen ergab, die auf der Bühne die Oper zum Leben brachten und jenen, die im Zuschauerraum dieses Leben virtuell mitvollzogen. Die in diesem Band versammelten Beiträge wollen helfen, dieses Spannungsverhältnis interpretierend aufzuschließen. Von der Entstehung des ästhetischen Denkens als einer eigenen Wissensdisziplin und seinen Herausforderungen an das politische und gesellschaftliche Denken seit dem 18. Jahrhundert in Europa reicht im ersten Teil des Buches der Spannungsbogen bis zum Nachdenken über die Stellung der Oper in der gegenwärtigen Gesellschaft. In einem zweiten Teil werden dann einzelne Opern jeweils auf ihre politischen und gesellschaftlichen Implikationen hin befragt und ein dritter Teil schließlich versammelt Arbeiten zum politisch-ästhetischen Denken Richard Wagners sowie zu Wagners geistesgeschichtlichen Verbindungen zu wichtigen Intellektuellen seiner Zeit und deren Wirkung bis in die Gegenwart.
