Opera al Nero è una silloge di poesie gotiche che indagano, celebrano e si inchinano alla condanna della non corrispondenza tra lo sguardo, l’anima e il fato. Sono la veglia eterna di un amore senza speranza e la biografia di una lontananza, da esso e dalla propria vita, preda di una sensibilità inquieta ed esasperata. L’assenza, la morte e il dolore da esse causato sono il filo conduttore della raccolta: la solitudine percepita nel sentire che la persona amata, il tempo e l’esistenza non corrispondono, la difficoltà a vivere l’istante con il peso del distacco e dello smarrimento addosso. Il titolo denuncia l’idea di una prima, fondamentale e forse perenne, fase di trasformazione: la dissoluzione del punto di vista impressa nella vena decadente dei versi, la tendenza a indugiare sulla caducità e sui richiami simbolici. Un verso indiretto nella composizione ma, forte del suo simbolismo, più diretto al sentire; liriche che nella loro oscurità criptano messaggi permeati di richiami metaforici, malattia, pathos e anagrammi che danno origine a inevitabili gorghi di ossessione. Per chi percepisce in maniera più sofferta il contatto con la realtà e con l’Altrove, deve poter esistere un modo diverso di vivere le parole e la poesia deve rivendicare questa esigenza, richiamare immagini e musicalità che marchino coscienza e orecchio con suadente brutalità, portando in superficie alterità celate all’immediatezza dei sensi.

This book considers the story of Nero and Octavia, as told in the pseudo-Senecan Octavia and the works of ancient historiographers, and its reception in (early) modern opera and some related examples of other performative genres. In total the study assembles more than 30 performative texts (including 22 librettos), ranging chronologically from L'incoronazione di Poppea in 1642/43 until the early 20th century, and provides detailed information on all of them. In a close examination of the libretto (and dramatic) texts, the study shows the impact and development of this fascinating story from the beginnings of historical opera onwards. The volume demonstrates the various transformations of the characters of Nero and his wives and of the depiction of their relationship over the centuries, and it looks at the tension between “historical” elements and genre conventions. The book is therefore of relevance to literary scholars as well as to readers interested in the evolution of Nero’s image in present-day media.
