A Silicon Microstrip Spectrometer was recently installed and operated in an 800 GeV proton beamline at Fermilab as a major new component of experiment E789. The detectors received an estimated radiation exposure of up to 7.8 x 1012 minimum ionizing particles per cm2 over a period of two months. We report on the changes in detector performance that we have observed following preliminary data analysis. 5 refs., 4 figs.

Over the last three years a significant program of detector technology research and development for high luminosity, high energy hadron-hadron colliders has been underway in the United States, Japan and Europe. In as much as the first formal steps have been undertaken to initiate the experimental program at the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC), it is appropriate to assess in detail the status of this R&D effort. Results and Plans for Advanced Technology R&D for Particle Physics Detectors Appropriate for SSC Experiments are Presented. Specific Topics include: Calorimetry; Particle Tracking and Identification Techniques; Vertex-Detection; Magnets; Front-End Electronics; Data Acquisition Electronics; Techniques in Triggering; Data Transmission; Data Analysis and Simulation Software; Studies on Radiation Damage to Materials and Electronics.

This book features up-to-date technology applications to radiation detection. It synthesises several techniques of and approaches to radiation detection, covering a wide range of applications and addressing a large audience of experts and students. Many of the talks are in fact reviews of particular topics often not covered in standard books and other conferences, for instance, the medical physics section. To present these medical physics talks is crucial, since a large fraction of the community in medical physics are from the particle physics community. The same feature is true for astroparticle and space physics, which are relatively new fields. This book is unique in its scope. Except for IEEE, there is no other conference in the world that presents such a wide coverage of advanced technology applied to particle physics. However, unlike IEEE, more room is made in the book for reviews and general talks.

Written by the leading names in this field, this book introduces the technical properties, design and fabrication details, measurement results, and applications of three-dimensional silicon radiation sensors. Such devices are currently used in the ATLAS experiment at the European Centre for Particle Physics (CERN) for particle tracking in high energy physics. These sensors are the radiation hardest devices ever fabricated and have applications in ground-breaking research in neutron detection, medical dosimetry and space technologies and more. Chapters explore the essential features of silicon particle detectors, interactions of radiation with matter, radiation damage effects, and micro-fabrication, in addition to a providing historical overview of the field. This book will be a key reference for students and researchers working with sensor technologies. Features: The first book dedicated to this unique and growing subject area, which is also widely applicable in high-energy physics, medical physics, space science and beyond Authored by Sherwood Parker, the inventor of the concept of 3D detectors; Cinzia Da Vià, who has brought 3DSi technology to application; and Gian-Franco Dalla Betta, a leading figure in the design and fabrication technology of these devices Explains to non-experts the essential features of silicon particle detectors, interactions of radiation with matter, radiation damage effects, and micro-fabrication

The 1997 International Europhysics Conference on High Energy Physics was held at the campus of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and at the Jerusalem Renaissance Hotel, from August 19th to August 25th, 1997. This was the first time that the European Physical Society had its High Energy Physics Conference outside the boundary of Europe. A total of 550 physicists participated in the conference with a total of 250 presentations in the parallel sessions and 26 presentations in the plenary sessions. The Board of the of the High Energy and Particle Physics division (HEPP) of the EPS acted as the Scientific Organizing Committee. The Board acknowl edges the help of the International Advisory Committee as well as that of the Local Organizing Committee. The conference was co-organized by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and by the Weizmann Institute of Science, with important help by physi cists from the Israeli Institute of Technology (Technion) and the Tel Aviv University.

A number of major new accelerator facilities, which have shaped the activities of many physicists for the better part of a decade: SLC, LEP, HERA, has been completed. The new generation of high-luminosity pp supercolliders, LHC, SSC and Eloisatron (ELN), represents the great challenge of subnuclear physics. In this challenge the crucial problem is the design of a superdetector. It is clear that building the detectors will be the bottleneck for the Supercolliders. The CERN-LAA project is a concerted effort to solve the problems imposed by the harsh experimental conditions, under which the new physics has to be studied. It is conceptually and practically a unique effort. This Workshop brought together the physicists working on the LAA project and their reports are found in this volume.
