Am Morgen nach ihrer feierlichen Verabschiedung in den vorzeitigen Ruhestand, steigen Kapitän Magnus Pricken und sein sprechender Papagei Cora im Hamburger Freihafen in ein Taxi, das sie zum Bahnhof Altona bringt, von wo sie in einem Intercity-Zug aus ihrem geliebten Seemannsleben rauschen. Am Abend steigen sie in Wiekenbüttel aus dem Linienbus, um bei Marthe, der Schwester des Kapitäns, ihren Lebensabend zu verbringen. Das heißt, erst einmal nur probeweise, weil sie nach ihrem abenteuerlichen Seefahrerleben gewisse Vorbehalte gegenüber einer vermeintlich gähnenden Leere bäuerlichen Landlebens hegen. Das ändert sich, als sie, schon in Sichtweite ihres Zielortes Kiebitzberge, von einem unsichtbaren Aggressor mittels einer subtil ausgetüftelten Methode angegriffen werden, was darauf schließen lässt, dass der Angreifer nicht von dieser Welt ist. Eine zur Hilfe herbeigeeilte Elfe rettet den Kapitän aus der tödlichen Umklammerung des außerterrestrischen Monsters. Von Marthe mit offenen Armen empfangen, werden die beiden Globetrotter von der urigen Dorfgemeinschaft akzeptiert und in diverse, das Dorf betreffende Geheimnisse eingeweiht. Dann überschlagen sich die Ereignisse. Eine Turbulenz der vierten Dimension löst in der Region eine Zeitebenenverschiebung aus, die eine längst vergangene Epoche sporadisch mit der Gegenwart kollidieren lässt, was dazu führt, dass unter einer Brücke im Wiekenbruch Stimmen von Unsichtbaren aus dem 8. Jahrhundert vernehmbar werden. Die unsichtbaren Fremden ersuchen um Hilfe und versuchen ihr Anliegen auf Althochdeutsch verständlich zu machen. Das Resultat einer simultanen Übersetzung der uralten, ausgestorbenen Sprache durch einen Chatbot, bleibt jedoch rätselhaft. Die einzige brauchbare Andeutung weist auf ein Zeit-Portal hin, das in einem Tumulus verborgen ist, und unter ganz bestimmten Voraussetzungen einen Zugang in die mehr als 1200 Jahre zurückliegende Zeitebene ermöglicht. Von Hilfsbereitschaft, aber auch Neugier und Lust auf Abenteuer getrieben, findet sich eine Gruppe Entschlossener, die unter Kapitän Prickens Führung, dem kryptischen Hilferuf in die Vergangenheit folgt. Sie bemerken nicht die verdeckt agierenden Ermittler einer dubiosen Gesellschaft. Dank der Unterstützung ortsansässiger Elfen, befreundeter Ratten und Marthes runenkundiger Enkelkinder überwinden aber am Ende die Gefährten um Kapitän Pricken alle Hindernisse und öffnen das buntbewegte Kaleidoskop dieser spannenden Geschichte mit verblüffendem Ausgang.
