This booklet contains the notes of the courses in Interpolation Theory that I gave at Scuola Normale in 1998 and in 1999. In the mathematical literature there are many good books on the subject, but none of them is very elementary, and in many cases the basic principles are hidden below great generality. In these lectures I tried to illustrate the principles of Interpolation Theory aiming at simplification rather than at generality. I reduced the abstract theory as far as possible, and gave many examples and applications, especially to partial differential operators and partial differential equations. Moreover the treatment is self-contained, the only prerequisite being the knowledge of basic functional analysis.

Systems and control theories use sophisticated operator theoretical methods. They also provide new ideas and problems in operator theory. As a consequence, the biannual MTNS (Mathematical Theory of Networks and Systems) conference is attended by many operator theorists. At the initiative of J.W. Helton and I. Gohberg, an International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications (IWOTA) has been organized since the early 80s, as a satellite of MTNS. The articles in this volume originated from the IWOTA conference held at Indiana University, Bloomington, in June 1996. They represent most of the areas that were discussed at the workshop with some emphasis on modern interpolation theory, a topic which has seen much progress in recent years. The contributions were, as usual, subject to a thorough refereeing process and will bring the reader to the forefront of current research in this area.

This volume contains the proceedings of the eighteenth International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications (IWOTA), hosted by the Unit for Business Mathematics and Informatics of North-West University, Potchefstroom, South Africa from July 3 to 6, 2007. The conference (as well as these proceedings) was dedicated to Professors Joseph A. Ball and Marinus M. Kaashoek on the occasion of their 60th and 70th birthdays, respectively. This conference had a particular focus on Von Neumann algebras at the interface of operator theory with functional analysis and on applications of operator theory to differential equations.

In this monograph, we combine operator techniques with state space methods to solve factorization, spectral estimation, and interpolation problems arising in control and signal processing. We present both the theory and algorithms with some Matlab code to solve these problems. A classical approach to spectral factorization problems in control theory is based on Riccati equations arising in linear quadratic control theory and Kalman ?ltering. One advantage of this approach is that it readily leads to algorithms in the non-degenerate case. On the other hand, this approach does not easily generalize to the nonrational case, and it is not always transparent where the Riccati equations are coming from. Operator theory has developed some elegant methods to prove the existence of a solution to some of these factorization and spectral estimation problems in a very general setting. However, these techniques are in general not used to develop computational algorithms. In this monograph, we will use operator theory with state space methods to derive computational methods to solve factorization, sp- tral estimation, and interpolation problems. It is emphasized that our approach is geometric and the algorithms are obtained as a special application of the theory. We will present two methods for spectral factorization. One method derives al- rithms based on ?nite sections of a certain Toeplitz matrix. The other approach uses operator theory to develop the Riccati factorization method. Finally, we use isometric extension techniques to solve some interpolation problems.

Concise treatment focuses on theory of shift operators, Toeplitz operators and Hardy classes of vector- and operator-valued functions. Topics include general theory of shift operators on a Hilbert space, use of lifting theorem to give a unified treatment of interpolation theorems of the Pick-Nevanlinna and Loewner types, more. Much of the importance of mathematics lies in its ability to provide theories which are useful in widely different fields of endeavour. A good example is the large and amorphous body of knowledge known as the theory of linear operators or operator theory, which came to life about a century ago as a theory to encompass properties common to matrix, differential, and integral operators. Thus, it is a primary purpose of operator theory to provide a coherent body of knowledge which can explain phenomena common to the enormous variety of problems in which such linear operators play a part. The theory is a vital part of functional analysis, whose methods and techniques are one of the major advances of twentieth century mathematics and now play a pervasive role in the modeling of phenomena in probability, imaging, signal processing, systems theory, etc, as well as in the more traditional areas of theoretical physics and mechanics. This book is based on lectures presented at a meeting on operator theory and its applications held at the Fields Institute in 1994.

On November 12-14, 1997 a workshop was held at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam on the occasion of the sixtieth birthday ofM. A. Kaashoek. The present volume contains the proceedings of this workshop. The workshop was attended by 44 participants from all over the world: partici pants came from Austria, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, The Netherlands, South Africa, Switzerland, Ukraine and the USA. The atmosphere at the workshop was very warm and friendly. There where 21 plenary lectures, and each lecture was followed by a lively discussion. The workshop was supported by: the Vakgroep Wiskunde of the Vrije Univer siteit, the department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Vrije Univer siteit, the Stichting VU Computer Science & Mathematics Research Centre, the Thomas Stieltjes Institute for Mathematics, and the department of Economics of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. The organizers would like to take this opportunity to express their gratitude for the support. Without it the workshop would not have been so successful as it was. Interpolation Of Operators written by Colin Bennett and has been published by Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1988-04-01 with Mathematics categories.
This book presents interpolation theory from its classical roots beginning with Banach function spaces and equimeasurable rearrangements of functions, providing a thorough introduction to the theory of rearrangement-invariant Banach function spaces. At the same time, however, it clearly shows how the theory should be generalized in order to accommodate the more recent and powerful applications. Lebesgue, Lorentz, Zygmund, and Orlicz spaces receive detailed treatment, as do the classical interpolation theorems and their applications in harmonic analysis. The text includes a wide range of techniques and applications, and will serve as an amenable introduction and useful reference to the modern theory of interpolation of operators.
