Durante tutti i conflitti che videro coinvolti gli Stati Uniti nel ventesimo secolo – dalla prima guerra mondiale a quella del Vietnam – i militari ebbero inevitabili e prolungati contatti con le popolazioni locali, alleate o nemiche che fossero. Dopo ognuna di queste guerre, molti soldati americani ritornarono in patria con mogli e compagne straniere e con i figli nati da tali relazioni. Il picco di quella che può essere a tutti gli effetti considerata una particolare forma di immigrazione, un’immigrazione “sentimentale”, si toccò durante e immediatamente dopo la seconda guerra mondiale. Tra il 1939 e il 1946, sedici milioni di giovani americani – dai diciotto ai trent’anni e per lo più celibi – vennero mobilitati per prendere parte a un conflitto che coinvolgeva cinquantasette paesi nel mondo. Non stupisce, dunque, che oltre centomila spose di guerra europee entrarono negli Stati Uniti, tra il 1946 e il 1950, anche grazie a speciali norme legislative – come il War Brides Act – varate dal governo statunitense. La maggior parte di queste donne erano britanniche, molte le francesi, le belghe, le tedesche e le olandesi; quasi diecimila le italiane. Questo libro, attraverso un’ampia documentazione e numerose testimonianze dei protagonisti, ricostruisce le storie delle unioni tra i soldati americani e le ragazze italiane, dal primo incontro al trasferimento oltreoceano, in quello che di fatto era un “nuovo mondo”, prendendo in considerazione gli aspetti pratici, amministrativi e logistici, ma anche i più personali e umani. Ogni vicenda fa naturalmente storia a sé e tuttavia assume un nuovo significato se proiettata sullo sfondo del contesto storico e sociale. Silvia Cassamagnaghi con rigore e insieme con empatia e delicatezza riesce a ricostruire il clima dell’epoca, le aspettative e i timori di donne e ragazze, le motivazioni individuali, gli innamoramenti e le difficoltà di comprensione tra persone, così come tra culture e società diverse, messe a confronto e destinate a convivere.

Honorable Mention for the 2019 American Association for Italian American Book Prize (20-21st Centuries) Allied Encounters uniquely explores Anglo-American and Italian literary, cinematic, and military representations of World War II Italy in order to trace, critique, and move beyond the gendered paradigm of redemption that has conditioned understandings of the Allied–Italian encounter. The arrival of the Allies’ global forces in an Italy torn by civil war brought together populations that had long mythologized one another, yet “liberation” did not prove to be the happy ending touted by official rhetoric. Instead of a “honeymoon,” the Allied–Italian encounter in cities such as Naples and Rome appeared to be a lurid affair, where the black market reigned supreme and prostitution was the norm. Informed by the historical context as well as by their respective traditions, these texts become more than mirrors of the encounter or generic allegories. Instead, they are sites in which to explore repressed traumas that inform how the occupation unfolded and is remembered, including the Holocaust, the American Civil War, and European colonialism, as well as individual traumatic events like the massacre of the Fosse Ardeatine and the mass civilian rape near Rome by colonial soldiers

A history of the Italians who came to the United States after World War II, and how American immigration policy was transformed. Whom We Shall Welcome examines post-World War II immigration of Italians to the United States, an under-studied period in Italian immigration history. Danielle Battisti looks at efforts by Italian American organizations to foster Italian immigration along with the lobbying efforts of Italian Americans to change the quota laws. While Italian Americans (and other white ethnics) had attained virtual political and social equality with many other groups of older-stock Americans by the end of the war, Italians continued to be classified as undesirable immigrants. Battisti’s work is an important contribution toward understanding the construction of Italian American racial/ethnic identity in this period, the role of ethnic groups in US foreign policy in the Cold War era, and the history of the liberal immigration reform movement that led to the 1965 Immigration Act.
