Neri Pozza nasce a Vicenza il 5 agosto 1912 da Ugo Pozza, scultore antifascista (1882-1945), e da Redenta Volpe (1887-1950) che da ragazza lavorò nella nota sartoria vicentina delle sorelle Dionisi. Nel 1938 fonda con i suoi amici, una piccola brigata di «teste calde» tenuta d’occhio dalla polizia fascista, le edizioni dell’Asino Volante per dare alle stampe La gaia gioventù, una raccolta di poesie di Antonio Barolini. Nel 1941 dà vita a una nuova sigla editoriale, Il Pellicano, e nel 1942 pubblica la fortunata antologia Saffo e altri lirici greci, curata da Manara Valgimigli, che conosce ben tre edizioni. Tra il 1944 e il 1945 viene incarcerato per due brevi periodi presso il carcere cittadino di San Biagio e presso quello di San Miche le per sospetta attività antifascista. Alla fine del 1945 si trasferisce a Venezia do ve incontra la compagna della sua vita, la scrittrice Lea Quaretti di cui pubblicherà le opere più importanti. Nel 1946 escono i primi due titoli di Neri Pozza Editore: Peter Rugg l’errante di William Austin e Paludi di André Gide, entrambi tradotti da Aldo Camerino. Nello stesso anno pubblica le Poesie nuove di Vincenzo Cardarelli e la raccolta di poesie intitolata Maschera in grigio. Nel 1947 vede la luce la celebre versione del Vangelo, affidata a quattro letterati: Nicola Lisi, Corrado Alvaro, Diego Valeri e Massimo Bontempelli. Tra il 1950 e il 1956 esco no i titoli che hanno dato lustro alla casa editrice: In quel preciso momento (1950) di Dino Buzzati, Il ragazzo morto e le comete (1951) e La grande vacanza (1953) di Goffredo Parise, Il primo libro delle favole (1952) di Carlo Emilio Gadda, Pianissimo (1954) di Camillo Sbarbaro, La bufera e altro (1956) e Farfalla di Dinard (1956) di Eugenio Montale. Nel 1961 nasce «Tradizione americana», la collana diretta da Agostino Lombardo, che inaugura le sue pubblicazioni con L’uomo di fiducia di Herman Melville. Tra il 1969 e il 1988 Neri Pozza dà alle stampe i suoi scritti più importanti, in primo luogo Processo per eresia (Vallecchi, 1969) che ha uno straordinario successo di pubblico e di critica, arrivando tra la cinquina dei libri finalisti al Premio Campiello del 1970. Il 9 febbraio 1981 si spegne a Vicenza Lea Quaretti. Neri Pozza muore il 6 novembre 1988 e viene sepolto nel cimitero di Longara, vicino alla sua amata compagna. Tra il 1989 e il 1998 appaiono postumi i seguenti volumi editi per i tipi della casa editrice che porta il suo nome: Poesie, a cura di Fernando Bandini (1989), Gli anni ideali (1996) e Libertà di vivere (1998).
