The term “Artificial Intelligence” has been used since 1956 and has become a very popular research field. Generally, it is the study of the computations that enable a system to perceive, reason and act. In the early days, it was expected to achieve the same intelligent behavior as a human, but found impossible at last. Its goal was thus revised to design and use of intelligent methods to make systems more ef- cient at solving problems. The term “Applied Intelligence” was thus created to represent its practicality. It emphasizes applications of applied intelligent systems to solve real-life problems in all areas including engineering, science, industry, automation, robotics, business, finance, medicine, bio-medicine, bio-informatics, cyberspace, and man-machine interactions. To endow the intelligent behavior of a system, many useful and interesting techniques have been developed. Some of them are even borrowed from the na- ral observation and biological phenomenon. Neural networks and evolutionary computation are two examples of them. Besides, some other heuristic approaches like data mining, adaptive control, intelligent manufacturing, autonomous agents, bio-informatics, reasoning, computer vision, decision support systems, expert s- tems, fuzzy logic, robots, intelligent interfaces, internet technology, planning and scheduling, are also commonly used in applied intelligence.

The International Conference on Industrial, Engineering and Other Applications of Applied Intelligent Systems (IEA/AIE), always sponsored by the International So- ety of Applied Intelligence (ISAI), emphasizes applications of applied intelligent systems to solve real-life problems in all areas. It is held every year and has become one of the biggest and most important academic activities concerning the theory and applications of intelligent systems in the world. The IEA/AIE 2009 conference was hosted by the National University of Tainan and National University of Kaohsiung in Taiwan. This was the first time that the IEA/AIE conference was held in Taiwan. We received 286 papers from all parts of the world. Only 84 papers were selected for publication in this volume of LNAI proceedings. Each paper was reviewed by at least two anonymous referees to assure the high quality. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the Program Committee members and all the reviewers for their hard work, which helped us to select the highest quality papers for the conference. These papers highlight opportunities and challenges for the next generation of applied int- ligence and reveal technological innovations in real applications.

The rapid increase in computing power and communication speed, coupled with computer storage facilities availability, has led to a new age of multimedia app- cations. Multimedia is practically everywhere and all around us we can feel its presence in almost all applications ranging from online video databases, IPTV, - teractive multimedia and more recently in multimedia based social interaction. These new growing applications require high-quality data storage, easy access to multimedia content and reliable delivery. Moving ever closer to commercial - ployment also aroused a higher awareness of security and intellectual property management issues. All the aforementioned requirements resulted in higher demands on various - eas of research (signal processing, image/video processing and analysis, com- nication protocols, content search, watermarking, etc.). This book covers the most prominent research issues in multimedia and is divided into four main sections: i) content based retrieval, ii) storage and remote access, iii) watermarking and co- right protection and iv) multimedia applications. Chapter 1 of the first section presents an analysis on how color is used and why is it crucial in nowadays multimedia applications. In chapter 2 the authors give an overview of the advances in video abstraction for fast content browsing, transm- sion, retrieval and skimming in large video databases and chapter 3 extends the discussion on video summarization even further. Content retrieval problem is tackled in chapter 4 by describing a novel method for producing meaningful s- ments suitable for MPEG-7 description based on binary partition trees (BPTs).

Why this book? Simply because it is due. Cognitive automation and its system-ergonomic introduction into work systems have been advanced in the meantime to such a degree that already applications for operational work systems are slowly becoming reality. This book shall contribute to give system designers some more guidelines about designing work systems and associated cognitive machines effectively, in particular those related to guidance and control of manned and unmanned vehicles. Complex Automated Negotiations have been widely studied and are becoming an important, emerging area in the field of Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems. In general, automated negotiations can be complex, since there are a lot of factors that characterize such negotiations. These factors include the number of issues, dependency between issues, representation of utility, negotiation protocol, negotiation form (bilateral or multi-party), time constraints, etc. Software agents can support automation or simulation of such complex negotiations on the behalf of their owners, and can provide them with adequate bargaining strategies. In many multi-issue bargaining settings, negotiation becomes more than a zero-sum game, so bargaining agents have an incentive to cooperate in order to achieve efficient win-win agreements. Also, in a complex negotiation, there could be multiple issues that are interdependent. Thus, agent’s utility will become more complex than simple utility functions. Further, negotiation forms and protocols could be different between bilateral situations and multi-party situations. To realize such a complex automated negotiati on, we have to incorporate advanced Artificial Intelligence technologies includes search, CSP, graphical utility models, Bays nets, auctions, utility graphs, predicting and learning methods. Applications could include e-commerce tools, decisionmaking support tools, negotiation support tools, collaboration tools, etc. These issues are explored by researchers from different communities in Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent systems. They are, for instance, being studied in agent negotiation, multi-issue negotiations, auctions, mechanism design, electronic commerce, voting, secure protocols, matchmaking & brokering, argumentation, and co-operation mechanisms.
