Essay aus dem Jahr 2008 im Fachbereich Politik - Thema: Globalisierung, pol. Ökonomie, Note: 1A, University of Stirling, Veranstaltung: International Business, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Globalisation is omnipresent in today’s society and economy. The reduction of international communication and logistic costs, the increase in customer mobility and market homogeneity and other present-day trends are among the reasons for the emergence of small and medium firms which are able to operate internationally rapidly after inception – so-called ‘Born globals’. But while the new research field of ‘International entrepreneurship’ focuses mainly on the phenomenon and process of internationalization a lack of insight into the challenges, which Born globals are confronted with during their internationalization process, is apparent. Important in this case is the question of how these challenges differ from those of traditional internationalizing small and medium enterprises. This essay will examine the definition and characteristics of born global small and medium enterprises, and will then go on to analyse the reasons for the emergence and review related literature to found conceptual foundation for the discussion. Subsequent will be the discussion of opportunities and threats of the born global way in contrast to the traditional way of internationalization. Finally, a conclusion will reflect on the main findings of this work.

Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, University of Augsburg, language: English, abstract: It is a well-known fact that in the past decades globalization has taken international trade to another level, i.e. there are more and more companies involved in international business, importing and exporting at a higher level than ever before. From the scientific point of view though there have been made observations concerning a specific kind of companies whose international activities seem to contradict the traditional, incremental models of the internationalization process of a firm. These traditional theories assume that just after having established a certain domestic market position and having gathered enough business experience the internationalization process of the firm begins (cf. Uppsala-Modell: Johanson and Vahlne, 1977, 1990). The contradiction though consists in the fact that the mentioned specific kind of companies goes international right from its inception and seems to perceive the whole world as one single market which can be entered and supplied just as easy as the domestic one (Oviatt and McDougall, 1994). So what will be discussed in this paper is in general the phenomenon of the so-called born globals (Rennie, 1993) and in specific the differences that might exist between those born globals and other young traditional internationalizing companies.

This edited volume explores the learning and innovation of Chinese firms. In particular, it examines the difficulties and obstacles affecting the technological collaboration between Chinese firms and foreign partners as well as some of the key organizational and institutional challenges of innovation facing Chinese firms. Despite enjoying rapid economic growth in previous decades, learning and innovation of Chinese firms has received relatively limited attention among management and international business scholars in the past. However, some significant changes in the Chinese institutional environment have occurred in recent years. On one hand, the Chinese central government has devised a number of policy initiatives to promote and support innovative activities in China, ranging from the ‘Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation by All’ to the latest ‘Made in China 2025’. On the other hand, we have witnessed an increasing number of indigenous Chinese firms (e.g. Alibaba, Baidu, Tencent, Huawei and DJI) adopting business model innovation with global inputs and impacts in different business sectors, namely electronic commerce, telecommunication network equipment, social media, mobile payment and drones. In view of these recent developments, we aim to further our understanding about the learning and innovation processes of Chinese firms in this edited volume.

The challenges and opportunities that are presented to both small and medium-sized enterprises have changed dramatically in recent decades as the world’s economy becomes more globalised. The policies of open borders, a decrease in protectionism and the demise of the nation-state, have enabled small and large firms to engage in international activity from the outset. Understanding the Born Global Firm, combines the many different theoretical perspectives on born globals that have been previously researched, providing a unified framework to connect the antecedents, types and outcomes of entrepreneurial activities pursued by such new ventures. A central case study of an international fashion firm which operates in over nine countries, runs through the text, highlighting the formation and success of born globals and the importance of cultural competence. This book will be invaluable to post-graduate students in the field of international business; entrepreneurship; ethnic entrepreneurs; global entrepreneurship, and international networks.
