Excerpt from Opportunities for Higher Education in Italy Many Americans think of Italy as a country of splendid history and interesting ruins. They are unaware of its remarkable progress in the activities that characterize the most advanced nations of today. They do not know of the great work done in its technical schools in the field of applied as well as of pure science which is so largely responsible for its industrial development. Nor do they know of the reputation of its distinguished scholars in the various humanistic subjects. This little guide to the Italian universities, other institutions of higher learning, technical schools, and higher institutions of education for girls, is intended for the American student who desires to study in Italy. It does not attempt to be exhaustive, but aims to provide prospective students with such information as will enable them to choose intelligently their place as well as their course of study. Excerpt from Italian Studies Their Place in Modern Education: An Inaugural Address My interpretation of the charge laid upon me is that you desire to give an initial impulse to Italian studies here in a modern direction while derogatingnothing from the lofty position always held in Cambridge by the Italian Classics, and especially by Dante. No one who has grasped what Italian literature has meant to English poetry and English culture from the time when Chaucer left these shores for Italy and Milton re turned; from the day when the poet Gray crossed the Alps, to the days of Byron, of Leigh Hunt, of Keats, of Shelley, of Swinburne, of the Brownings, and of Meredith - no one I say can desire for a moment to depreciate the study of the Italian Classics. Let me repeat that no depreciation, no subordination even, of Dante and the classics to modern Italian studies is ln tended. That would be as inept as to neglect or depreciate Shakespeare in a chair of English at an Italian university: t/ze studies are complementary. Excerpt from Readings in the History of Education: Mediaeval Universities During the twelfth century a great educational revival manifested itself in western Europe, following upon sev eral centuries of intellectual decline or relative inactivity. Though its beginnings may be traced into the eleventh century, and though its culmination belongs to a much later period, the movement is Often called the Renais sance Of the Twelfth Century. In that century it first appears as a widely diffused and rapidly growing move ment, and it then takes on distinctly the characteristics which mark its later development. The revival appears first in Italy and France; from these regions it spreads during the next three centuries into England, Spain, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and Scotland. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Excerpt from The Italian Language: Introductory Lecture Delivered in Trinity College, Dublin "A national literature is a subject which should always be approached with reverence. It is difficult to comprehend fully the mind of a nation, even when that nation still lives, and we can visit it - and its present history, and the lives of men we know, help us to a comment on the written text. But here the dead alone speak." - Longfellow. A mortal blow had been given to the vigour of Roman civilization by the transference of the metropolis from Rome to Byzantium, and the consequent introduction of Asiatic forms and customs into the countries of the West. The mental powers of the Roman world seemed to be enervated and gradually to fade, and when the Empire was dissolved and its fragments reconstructed into municipalities, the Latin idea no longer maintained its entirety of sway. Still it ever preserved its substance, as being the germ in which the civilization of the West had developed and unfolded itself; and, as being the repository of the science of the time, was adopted by the new civilization - the civilization of Christianity.
