A study examined career opportunities for women in social science research careers in the United Kingdom. Data were collected from the following sources: review of literature/data on women in social science research and their career prospects; survey of Economic and Social Research Council research centers and independent research instituted to generate a gender profile of staff in 50 major research organizations; and interviews with 24 female researchers in a range of sectors, disciplines, and organizational positions/career stages. Overall, women were well represented among social science researchers; however, they were disproportionately concentrated in the lower levels of the researcher hierarchy. Representation of women in the individual social science research disciplines varied widely by discipline, with government social research showing a relatively high proportion of women in top positions and the university sector, government economic service, and independent institutes showing relatively low proportions of women in top positions. It was concluded that the difficulty of combining work and family life remains one of the key factors contributing to women's labor market disadvantage in social science research. (Twenty-three tables/figures and 83 references are included. Appended are the following: a list of organizations contacted; a questionnaire; and a draft concordat on contract research.) (MN)

Almost four in ten graduates studied one of the social sciences. Where do they go to work? How do their employment and earnings compare to those who graduate from other areas? What makes a difference to their employment chances? Positive Prospects provides a brief description of employment after graduation for those who study a wide range of social science subjects, using up-to-date information. The report gathers evidence from many sources about longer-term prospects and the backgrounds of ‘world leaders’. It shows that there is variation between those graduating from different social science disciplines, as there is with so-called STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) graduates. Positive Prospects takes a look at the effect of graduating from different types of university, while observing that this reflects a great many factors such as students’ backgrounds and where they live and study. One clear theme is that having number and data skills – either from secondary school or as part of undergraduate study – is likely to give individuals of every discipline a wider range of choices about work, meaning they are likely to earn more. Needless to say number and data skills are not the only things that matter, nor do all social science students need the same skill level. But the Campaign for Social Science has long believed that we need more people with conceptual social science skills and knowledge combined with some number and data skills – Positive Prospects shows that this combination has clear benefits. The Campaign has also prepared summaries aimed specifically at undergraduates, schools, and school students.

Social Science Careers Beyond the Academy provides a “road-map” to a career outside of academia for students of the social sciences who want to transition to a corporate or government environment after they complete their studies. It isn’t always easy to see how the skills you develop in academia will apply to corporate consultancy or research positions, or even to see clearly where these various career paths might lead and whether they might suit you. Are you a start-up person or do you think that a big, established organization will provide you with desirable opportunities? Would you prefer to work for a public or private firm, or perhaps for a government agency? Are you better at research or project management? How do you go about adapting your writing to the nonspecialist audience of colleagues in an organization? This book is written by a team of authors who straddle the line that separates academia from consultancy work and have mentored countless students to make a successful transition to the working world, whether in academia or not. The authors identify and categorize various popular paths that are available to you; describe the types of organization, roles, and what they involve; and show how to map your own skills, personality, and preferences to the jobs you might aspire to obtain. This book is the ultimate guide to building your path to success after you conclude your studies. Using an informal style, this book is ideal for social science students looking to make their next steps after academia by seeking positions in consulting and research firms, or with a government entity.
