Ten years have passed since the publication of the first edition of this classic text in April 2001. Considerable new material amounting to 100 pages has been added in this second edition. Each chapter now contains a Summary section at the end. The new material in Chapter 4 consists of a detailed comparison of Gaussian apodization with a corresponding beam, determination of the optimum value of the Gaussian radius relative to that of the pupil to yield maximum focal-point irradiance, detailed discussion of standard deviation, aberration balancing, and Strehl ratio for primary aberrations, derivation of the aberration-free and defocused OTF, discussion of an aberrated beam yielding higher axial irradiance in a certain defocused region than its aberration-free focal-point value, illustration that aberrated PSFs lose the advantage of Gaussian apodizaton in reducing the secondary maxima of a PSF, and a brief description of the characterization of the width of a multimode beam. In Chapter 5, the effect of random longitudinal defocus on a PSF is included. The coherence length of atmospheric turbulence is calculated for looking both up and down through the atmosphere. Also discussed are the angle of arrival of a light wave propagating through turbulence, and lucky imaging where better-quality short-exposure images are selected, aligned, and added to obtain a high-quality image.

Aberration Theory Made Simple written by Virendra N. Mahajan and has been published by SPIE Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991 with Science categories.
This book provides a clear, concise, and consistent exposition of what aberrations are, how they arise in optical imaging systems, and how they affect the quality of images formed by them. The emphasis of the book is on physical insight, problem solving, and numerical results, and the text is intended for engineers and scientists who have a need and a desire for a deeper and better understanding of aberrations and their role in optical imaging and wave propagation. Some knowledge of Gaussian optics and an appreciation for aberrations would be useful but is not required.

Advanced Optical Imaging Theory written by Min Gu and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-05 with Science categories.
Optical microscopy and associated technologies advanced quickly after the introduction of the laser. The techniques have stimulated further development of optical imaging theory, including 3-dimensional microscopy imaging theory in spatial and frequency domains, the theory of imaging with ultrashort-pulse beams and aberration theory for high-numerical-aperture objectives. This book introduces these new theories in terms of modern optical microscopy. It consists of seven chapters including an introduction. The chapters are organized to minimize cross-referencing. Comparisons with classical imaging theory are made when the new imaging theory is introduced. The book is intended for senior undergraduate students in courses on optoelectronics, optical engineering, photonics, biophotonics and applied physics, after they have completed modern optics or a similar subject. It is also a reference for other scientists interested in the field.

Based on the author's lectures at the University of Southern California, where he teaches a graduate course in optical imaging and aberrations, this volume provides an understanding of how aberrations arise in optical systems and how they affect imaging. Emphasis is placed on the primary aberrations of simple optical systems as a foundation for the design of more complex and high image-quality systems. Each chapter ends with a set of problems. A separate volume (Volume 2) treats imaging based on diffraction. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Aberration Corrected Imaging In Transmission Electron Microscopy written by Rolf Erni and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Science categories.
This book provides a concise introduction to practical aspects of atomic-resolution imaging in aberration-corrected electron microscopy. As such, it addresses recent advances in electron optical instrumentation used for ultra-high resolution imaging in materials and nano-science. It covers two of the most popular atomic resolution imaging techniques' namely high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy. The book bridges the gap between application-oriented textbooks in conventional electron microscopy and books in physics covering dedicated topics in charged-particle optics and aberration correction. The book is structured in three parts which can be read separately. While in the first part the fundamentals of the imaging techniques and their limits in conventional electron microscopes are explained, the second part provides readers with the basic principles of electron optics and the characteristics of electron lenses. The third part, focusing on aberrations, describes the functionality of aberration correctors and provides readers with practical guidelines for the daily work with aberration-corrected electron microscopes. The book represents a detailed and easy readable guide to aberration-corrected electron microscopy.

This comprehensive and self-contained text presents the fundamentals of optical imaging from the viewpoint of both ray and wave optics, within a single volume. Comprising three distinct parts, it opens with an introduction to electromagnetic theory, including electromagnetic diffraction problems and how they can be solved with the aid of standard numerical methods such as RCWA or FDTD. The second part is devoted to the basic theory of geometrical optics and the study of optical aberrations inherent in imaging systems, including large-scale telescopes and high-resolution projection lenses. A detailed overview of state-of-the-art optical system design provides readers with the necessary tools to successfully use commercial optical design software. The final part explores diffraction theory and concludes with vectorial wave propagation, image formation and image detection in high-aperture imaging systems. The wide-ranging perspective of this important book provides researchers and professionals with a comprehensive and rigorous treatise on the theoretical and applied aspects of optical imaging.

Wavefront Optics For Vision Correction written by Guang-ming Dai and has been published by SPIE Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Medical categories.
This book addresses some of the issues in visual optics with a functional analysis of ocular aberrations, especially for the purpose of vision correction. The basis is the analytical representation of ocular aberrations with a set of orthonormal polynomials, such as Zernike polynomials or the Fourier series. Although the aim of this book is the application of wavefront optics to laser vision correction, most of the theories discussed are equally applicable to other methods of vision correction, such as contact lenses and intraocular lenses.
