Optical Processing and Computing is a collection of research from the USA, Canada, Russia, and Poland on the developments in the fields of digital optical computing and analog optical processing. This book is organized into 15 chapters and begins with an overview of the hierarchy of interconnect problems. Some chapters deal with the fundamental limitations and capabilities of optics in relation to interconnections, switching, computing, materials, and devices. Other chapters explore the architectures, technology, and applications of the field. The topics range from promising areas in the early stages of development, such as nonlinear effects in fibers that could bring about the optical transistor, to developments in areas ready for technology, such as the production of optical kinoforms, an important type of computer-generated optical component. With a strong focus on the fundamental aspects of the field, this book is of interest to specialists, researchers, and students who need a broad coverage of the principles of optical computing and of the underlying physics.

Optical computing, namely information processing using light waves to represent the data, possesses some inherent advantage over electronic computing, in particular for massive data storage and parallell and neural processing. The main aim of the LS is to show how recent advances in lightwave technology make the time ripe to consider exploiting the potential of optical computing for data procesing applications. The LS will be opened with an overview of the basic concepts and inherent advantages of using optics for data processing and computing applications. The rest of the first day will be devoted to two topics: the use of optics for interconnecting computing devices and systems. The second day of the LS will be opened with an overview of the emerging field of artificial neural networks as a signal processing paradigm, and its hardware, and in particular its optical implementations. Finally, the LS will be concluded with a description of recent developments of optoelectronic data communication, and their forecasted effect on computing and data processing technologies.

What Is Optical Computing In optical computing, also known as photonic computing, light waves generated by lasers or other incoherent sources are used to perform computer tasks such as data processing, data storage, or data transfer. Photons have been shown their potential for some decades now to offer a larger bandwidth than the electrons that are employed in traditional computers. How You Will Benefit (I) Insights, and validations about the following topics: Chapter 1: Optical computing Chapter 2: Computing Chapter 3: Quantum computing Chapter 4: Timeline of quantum computing and communication Chapter 5: Photonic crystal Chapter 6: Quantum algorithm Chapter 7: Quantum network Chapter 8: Shlomi Dolev Chapter 9: Fiber laser Chapter 10: Interconnect bottleneck Chapter 11: Photonic integrated circuit Chapter 12: Silicon photonics Chapter 13: Computer-generated holography Chapter 14: Subwavelength-diameter optical fibre Chapter 15: Optical transistor Chapter 16: Orbital angular momentum multiplexing Chapter 17: Photonic molecule Chapter 18: Linear optical quantum computing Chapter 19: Integrated quantum photonics Chapter 20: JCMsuite Chapter 21: Quantum memory (II) Answering the public top questions about optical computing. This volume contains the complete set of papers presented at the First U. S. -U. S. S. R. Sciences Cooperation Seminar on "Optical Information Processing" held at the U. S. National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D. C. from 16 - 20 June 1975 under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation in cooperation with the U. S. S. R. Academy of Sciences. The papers present the latest theoretical advances and ex perimental state of the art in the newly developing field of "opti cal information processing", with particular emphasis on appli cations to communication, information storage and processing. Digital as well as optical systems are discussed in terms of concepts and implementations. Included are coherent and inco herent optical processing systems (for images and signals), materials and devices for optical computing, acousto-optic signal processing, memories (optical, digital and holographic), optical logic and optically-accessed digital stores, non-linear optical processing, as well as an analysis of the information capacity of optical processing systems and a report on new ex tensions of information processing in synthetic aperture radar. Detailed configurations and new manufacturing techniques for several components are presented, including such topics as "asymmetric interference fringes in reflected light" and' kino form optical elements" of very high quality; these are phase plates having a carefully controlled thickness, somewhat com parable to the famous Schmidt plates and which could have an important role in many optical computer and communications systems.

In recent years, optical computing and optical neural networks research has enriched the field originally known as optical signal processing. Optical Signal Processing, Computing, and Neural Networks is a self-contained textbook that offers an introductory survey which examines photonics, linear and nonlinear signal processing, and numerical, symbolic, and neural computing. This comprehensive sourcebook is a basic text for students who lack an intensive background in optic, electromagnetic, computer, and neural network theories. It will also serve as a working reference for optical physicists and engineers involved in current research and development of modern optical signal processing that includes optical computing and neural networks. The first chapter of this book contains the basic coherent theory and concepts of optical transformation. The second chapter introduces the fundamental concept of optical signal processing and its architectures. The third chapter presents selected applications in coherent optics while the fourth chapter discusses white-light processing and its applications. The advances of spatial-light modulators are discussed as well as hybrid-optical architectures using spatial-light modulators in later chapters. Applications of photorefractive crystals in optical signal processing are presented in chapter 7. Digital-optical computing is described in chapter 8 while optical neural networks and their architectures, designs, and models are thoroughly covered in chapter 9. Examples and experimental results are included throughout the book to emphasize the concepts. Chapters include problem sets, 330 throughout, that reinforce key elements in the text.
