Excerpt from Optical Shop Practice The optical business has passed through its embryonic stage and has emerged into the world of science. It has attained a position wherein modern thought and achievement have made it a vital part of our daily life, for the exacting qualifications of modern times demand quickness of perception, and the faculty of perception depends upon the eye to a very great degree. Accuracy is the paramount factor in meeting these requirements - scientific accuracy. However, despite this condition, the practice of optical work is simple enough, if those who follow it adhere to the fixed rule of following demonstrated procedures governed by good judgment. Very few individuals are without the power of concentration to a greater or less extent, and this faculty can be cultivated by practice and care. Just as the babe must first learn to stand alone before being able to walk and then to run, the optical shopman must go at his work by easy stages and by persistence will finally master his objective. This volume has been designed for the beginner. It is written in simplified form, avoiding technical language as much as possible, and the average boy or girl of fifteen should be able to grasp its message. It handles its subject from the practical viewpoint and covers every step necessary, so that the student who follows its directions will be able, by applying the same in a practical way, to develope into an efficient worker. Excerpt from The Making of a Mechanical Optician: A Treatise on the Equipment and Mechanical Work of Optometrists and Opticians In beginning this treatise we have in mind partially the optician who is considering the advisability of installing a plant to do his own work, and, naturally, the first question to decide is whether it is advisable to install such a plant. The arguments in favor of doing so are the following: The accommodation to your customer, the new customers it will bring by advertising that you do your own work and the extra profit. The arguments against it are: The extra responsibility and labor it will put upon you; have you enough prescription work to make it an object, and if so, can, you afford to hire a man, and would it not be advisable to use the time time that you would put into this work to develop your refracting business? This matter you can best decide for yourself, but, assuming that you decide to take the step, the next thing is to lay the plans for your shop and select the machinery. It was formerly the custom to engage an attic room in some old building on a side street, order a grindstone and. engage car, penters and machinists to fit it up. As it was impossible to estimate the expense, it frequently was exorbitant. Now that has all changed, as it is possible to purchase an entire outfit, ready to run, at a nominal cost. This not only saves a great deal of worry, but you can figure the cost almost to a cent. Another great advantage is that the outfit, sold by the wholesalers to-day, can be used in any office, even with a rug on the floor, and can be kept as clean as a piece of furniture. The best place for a bench depends somewhat on the circumstances. Some prefer to have an extra room for this work; others fit up part of the refracting room or the reception room. If you have an office, consisting of only one room, you can perhaps select a corner near a window, and, if you prefer, you can stand a screen in front of it. In fourth-century Greece (BCE), the debate over the nature of philosophy generated a novel claim: that the highest form of wisdom is theoria, the rational 'vision' of metaphysical truths (the 'spectator theory of knowledge'). This 2004 book offers an original analysis of the construction of 'theoretical' philosophy in fourth-century Greece. In the effort to conceptualise and legitimise theoretical philosophy, the philosophers turned to a venerable cultural practice: theoria (state pilgrimage). In this practice, an individual journeyed abroad as an official witness of sacralized spectacles. This book examines the philosophic appropriation and transformation of theoria, and analyses the competing conceptions of theoretical wisdom in fourth-century philosophy. By tracing the link between traditional and philosophic theoria, this book locates the creation of theoretical philosophy in its historical context, analysing theoria as a cultural and an intellectual practice. It develops a new, interdisciplinary approach, drawing on philosophy, history and literary studies.
