This book focuses on the key technologies supporting orbital-angular-momentum multiplexing communication: generation, transmission, detection, and application of vortex beams. A series of methods for generating vortex beams are described and compared in detail. Laguerre-Gaussian and Bessel-Gaussian beams are taken as examples to introduce the transport properties of vortex beams in atmospheric turbulence. The authors show that superposition of vortex beam state, interference, diffraction, and grating can realize the detection of the topological charge of vortex beams. The authors also introduce the application of vortex beams in optical communication and the transmission characteristics of partially coherent vortex beams in atmospheric turbulence. Finally, the authors describe vortex beam information exchange and channel reconstruction.

An optical vortex (also known as a screw dislocation or phase singularity) is one type of optical singularity that has a spiral phase wave front around a singularity point where the phase is undefined. Optical vortex beams have a lot of applications in areas such as optical communications, LADAR (laser detection and ranging) system, optical tweezers, optical trapping and laser beam shaping. The concepts of optical vortex beams and methods of generation are briefly discussed. The properties of optical vortex beams propagating through atmospheric turbulence have been studied. A numerical modeling is developed and validated which has been applied to study the high order properties of optical vortex beams propagating though a turbulent atmosphere. The simulation results demonstrate the advantage that vectorial vortex beams may be more stable and maintain beam integrity better when they propagate through turbulent atmosphere. As one important application of optical vortex beams, the laser beam shaping is introduced and studied. We propose and demonstrate a method to generate a 2D flat-top beam profile using the second order full Poincare beams. Its applications in two-dimensional flat-top beam shaping with spatially variant polarization under low numerical aperture focusing have been studied both theoretically and experimentally. A novel compact flat-top beam shaper based on the proposed method has been designed, fabricated and tested. Experimental results show that high quality flat-top profile can be obtained with steep edge roll-off. The tolerance to different input beam sizes of the beam shaper is also verified in the experimental demonstration. The proposed and experimentally verified LC beam shaper has the potential to become a promising candidate for compact and low-cost flat-top beam shaping in areas such as laser processing/machining, lithography and medical treatment.

Optical vortices are singularities in phase fronts of laser beams. They are characterized by a dark core due to phase dislocation emanating from the zero in field. A "charge" can be associated with the dislocation, the sign of which changes depending on whether the phase increases or decreases by an integer multiple of 2[pi] upon circling the zero. The object of the research presented in this dissertation was to explore ways for triggering or exploding a higher order vortex and to examine arithmetic properties of optical vortices using analytical and numerical methods. Diffractive optical masks can be produced to generate complex array patterns. Horizontal and vertical shift of complex patterns can be done with great ease. Rouche's theorem was used for analyzing and then providing a means for dramatically modifying a vortex structure for vortex-order conversion. We also report an efficient method for destroying an optical vortex. We have shown how fabricating masks for observing vortices in the complex space (off the real plane) one can super resolve submicron sized features. The results presented in the thesis offer us a better understanding of dynamics of exploded vortices which may result in application in optical switching, optical data storage, manipulation of micro particles and free-space data communication.

From the Maxwell theory, we have known that electromagnetic radiation carries not only energy but also momentum. The momentum of the light includes both the linear momentum and angular momentum, which has a spin angular momentum associated with polarization and an orbital part associated with spatial phase distribution. While the angular momentum is along the propagation direction mostly, it is still worth exploring the transverse orbital angular momentum.Light is twisted around the propagation axis in optical vortices, which is characterized by a helical wavefront and a zero intensity in the center. The optical vortices with transverse orbital angular momentum means the spiral phase is applied to the spatiotemporal plane instead of the transverse plane. The degree of circulation could be controlled by given a specific topological charge. We are going to present how to generate a spatiotemporal optical vortex with a controllable intrinsic transverse orbital angular momentum, as well as the phase measurement of the vortices beam. The experiment is also completed and the result matches the theory very well. On this basis, we will introduce the three-dimension measurement of the wave packet. The reconstruction intensity profile will present in this work. The propagarion of ST vortices in the 4f system is also studied. The unique property of optical vortices with transverse angular orbital momentum attracting us to explore more applications in the future, such as high speed optical communications, optical tweezer, and manipulate nanostructures on ultrafast time scales. The result of this work encourages us to move to the next step.

"This engagingly written text provides a useful pedagogical introduction to an extensive class of geometrical phenomena in the optics of polarization and phase, including simple explanations of much of the underlying mathematics." —Michael Berry, University of Bristol, UK "The author covers a vast number of topics in great detail, with a unifying mathematical treatment. It will be a useful reference for both beginners and experts...." —Enrique Galvez, Charles A. Dana Professor of Physics and Astronomy, Colgate University "a firm and comprehensive grounding both for those looking to acquaint themselves with the field and those of us that need reminding of the things we thought we knew, but hitherto did not understand: an essential point of reference." —Miles Padgett, Kelvin Chair of Natural Philosophy and Vice Principal (Research), University of Glasgow This book focuses on the various forms of wavefield singularities, including optical vortices and polarization singularities, as well as orbital angular momentum and associated applications. It highlights how an understanding of singular optics provides a completely different way to look at light. Whereas traditional optics focuses on the shape and structure of the non-zero portions of the wavefield, singular optics describes a wave’s properties from its null regions. The contents cover the three main areas of the field: the study of generic features of wavefields, determination of unusual properties of vortices and wavefields that contain singularities, and practical applications of vortices and other singularities.
