Service systems with queues are all around us in our daily life. It is commonly found that in service queuing systems known, the decision whether to join the system made prior to the observation of the queue. If offered the opportunity, customers may rather pay a price for inspecting the queue prior to the decision to join, lowering their chance of encountering a busy queue and spending precious time on waiting. The provider's dilemma is for what price to reveal this information, and whether there is an optimal price which can maximize system's throughput or provider's revenue. The main purpose in this work, is obtaining the optimal pricing mechanism of queue statues prior to the decision to join with general service time distribution. The first step is to formalize the optimization problem. The lack of assumptions regarding the service time distribution makes the analysis complex. This is because, unlike the memoryless case, the information regarding the queue length plays a role in assessing the residual service time. The second step is presenting an example of a numerical solution, which has to depend on the service time distribution. -- abstract.

The general problem of finding optimal policies for operating queuing systems is investigated in order to determine when to open or close servers so as to minimize cost. The queue size is observed at equally spaced intervals of time and the structure of the optimal policy is determined. The main restriction made, at first, is to limit the model to a single server system. Justification for a form of an optimal policy is given. Then the proofs that this policy is in fact optimal for the finite horizon, and averaging cost criterion are given. Also, conditions for determining that the server should never be closed with customers in queue are presented. The problem is then generalized to allow for a fixed number of servers. (Author).

An optimal operating policy is characterized for the infinite horizon average cost case of a queueing control problem with the following properties: N priority classes of customers each arriving according to an independent Poisson process, a holding charge of h(i) per customer of class i per unit time and a single server who provides independent identically distributed service times and who may be turned on at arrival epochs or off at departure epochs. The server costs w per unit time to operate and there are fixed charges of S(sub 1) and S(sub 2) for turning the server on and off respectively. It is shown that a stationary optimal policy exists which either (1) leaves the server on at all times or (2) turns the server off when the system is empty. In the latter case if the state of the system is represented as a point in N-dimensional Euclidean space, the server is turned on at the first time when the state reaches a boundary and this boundary is a hyperplane of dimension N-1. Some models for the optimal design of queueing systems are presented. In most models studied, the decision variables are the number of servers (c) and the mean rate (mu) at which each serves. The objective function is the steady-state total expected cost rate of operating the system, which is assumed to be the sum of a cost of operating the service mechanism and a cost due to customers waiting in the system. It is shown that a single-server system is optimal for a wide class of arrival processes and service-time distributions, a wide variety of service and waiting cost functions, and a wide variety of system structures and operating policies. The optimality of the single-server system is first demonstrated for single-station models with general arrival process and degenerate, exponential, or Erlang service-time distribution, where the service-cost rate is proportional to both c and mu and the waiting-cost rate is proportional to the number of customers in the system. Several generalizations of this model are presented. (Author).
