During the last years, as power demand grow, the power systems become increasingly more difficult to operate within the indices power quality, and the system become more insecure with unscheduled power flows and higher losses. In this context to overcome the technical difficulty related to power system security, a new concept has been introduced to power system operation and control called Flexible Alternative Current Transmission System (FACTS). The main objective of the different FACTS technology is to bring a system under flexible control and to transmit power as ordered by the control centre. In other term, this new technology allows to increase the power system security at severe loading conditions and critical situations (Contingency). This thesis gives an insight on the application of hybrid parallel global optimization methods based: Genetic Algorithm, Particle Swarm Optimization, and Fuzzy logic, to enhance the optimal power flow solution with consideration of multi type FACTS Controllers. This thesis will be especially useful to graduate students, academic researchers, and engineers specialized in power system operation and control

Flexible AC transmission system devices (FACTS) are most promising controllers in present day scenario when it comes to power transmission in long distances in smart grids. FACTS devices provide system stability, midpoint voltage support and reactive power control in grid interconnections. Conventionally, power flow algorithm was used to evaluate the rating of FACTS devices by taking consideration of magnitude of voltage and phase angle as independent variables. Nowadays, FACTS device rating is evaluated with a new framework called optimal power flow. This chapter provides a comparison for optimal power flow, with or without FACTS devices such as static VAR compensator (SVC) and thyristor controlled series capacitor (TCSC), in terms of cost saving and loss reduction in smart grid scenario.

The thesis will try to summarise the major power system problems and the important role of the FACTS devices to enhance the power system quality. Then, it will give a brief description for various FACTS and Active Filters controllers as mentioned on the existing publications. Most of the control schemes introduced in the existing papers were designed either for eliminating current harmonics or eliminating voltage flickers or for load flow control. So, this work is devoted to find a proper optimal control schemes for a system with series or shunt or series and shunt converters that can provide all functions together.Various optimal control schemes will be designed for systems with series, shunt and series-shunt converters with the objective to control the load flow through a lines and to eliminate current harmonics and voltage flickers with different strategies for tracking. Chapter 1: Gives a general description of most power system problems and the basic techniques used to improve the power system quality. It also gives idea about basic objectives from the FACTS devices.Chapter 2: Offers detailed description for the basic types of FACTS devices and active filters existing in power industry.Chapter 3: Describes various shunt controllers for control of the Static Compensator (STATCOM) and various series controllers for the control of the Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) and various Unified Power Flow Controllers (UPFC) as covered in most existing papers.Chapter 4: Describes the major control schemes for the shunt active filter as covered by most existing papers.Chapter 5: Describes the major control schemes for the other types of active filters as covered by most existing papers.Chapter 6: Gives description for optimal control design.Chapter 7: Case studies to design different optimal control schemes for system with UPFC unit to control the power flow, eliminate voltage flicker and eliminate current harmonics. The case studies were repeated for system with only series or shunt converters.

"The electric utility restructuring and the open access in recent years has resulted in overloading the transmission network of the power system. The process of mitigating the transmission line overloads for all single contingencies is done by the optimal placement of power flow control devices like FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) devices. FACTS devices like UPFC (Unified Power Flow Controller), which can control the power flow by changing the impedance of the line, are used in this project. The optimization for the placement of FACTS devices is done by using the genetic algorithm."--Abstract, p. iii.

Deregulated power systems suffer from congestion management problems. Also they cannot fully utilize transmission lines due to excessive power loss that it could cause. FACTS devices such as thyristor-controlled series compensators (TCSC) can, by controlling the power flow in the network, help reducing the flows in heavily loaded lines. Also they can minimize the power loss of the systems. However, because of the considerable cost of FACTS devices, it is important to minimize their number and obtain their optimal locations in the system. This book presents an approach to find the optimal location of thyristor-Controlled series compensators in a power system to improve the loadability of its lines and minimize its total loss. Also the proposed approach aims to find the optimal number of devices and their optimal compensation levels by using a genetic algorithm taking into consideration the thermal and voltage limits. Examination of the proposed approach is carried out on a several IEEE systems.
