The mining business faces continual risks in producing metals and raw materials under fluctuating market demand. At the same time, the greatest uncertainty driving the risk and profitability of mining investments is the geological variability of mineral deposits. This supply uncertainty affects the prediction of economic value from the initial valuation of a mining project through mine planning, design and production scheduling. This book is the first of its kind, presenting state-of-the-art stochastic simulation and optimization techniques and step-by-step case studies. Quantification of geological uncertainty through new efficient conditional simulation techniques for large deposits, integration of uncertainty to stochastic optimization formulations for design and production scheduling and the concurrent management of risk are shown to create flexibility, options and oportunities, increase asset value, cashflows and return on investment. New approaches introduced include resource/reserve risk quantification, cost-effective drilling programs, pit design and long-term production scheduling optimization with simulated orebodies, ore reserve classification, geologic risk discounting, waste managing and demand driven scheduling, risk assessment in meeting project production schedules ahead of mining, risk based optimal stope design, options valuation when mining. Applications include commodities such as gold, copper, nickel, iron ore, coal and diamonds.

Drilling and production wells are becoming more digitalized as oil and gas companies continue to implement machine learning andbig data solutions to save money on projects while reducing energy and emissions. Up to now there has not been one cohesiveresource that bridges the gap between theory and application, showing how to go from computer modeling to practical use. Methodsfor Petroleum Well Optimization: Automation and Data Solutions gives today’s engineers and researchers real-time data solutionsspecific to drilling and production assets. Structured for training, this reference covers key concepts and detailed approaches frommathematical to real-time data solutions through technological advances. Topics include digital well planning and construction, moving teams into Onshore Collaboration Centers, operations with the best machine learning (ML) and metaheuristic algorithms, complex trajectories for wellbore stability, real-time predictive analytics by data mining, optimum decision-making, and case-basedreasoning. Supported by practical case studies, and with references including links to open-source code and fit-for-use MATLAB, R,Julia, Python and other standard programming languages, Methods for Petroleum Well Optimization delivers a critical training guidefor researchers and oil and gas engineers to take scientifically based approaches to solving real field problems. Bridges the gap between theory and practice (from models to code) with content from the latest research developments supported by practical case study examples and questions at the end of each chapter Enables understanding of real-time data solutions and automation methods available specific to drilling and production wells, suchas digital well planning and construction through to automatic systems Promotes the use of open-source code which will help companies, engineers, and researchers develop their prediction and analysissoftware more quickly; this is especially appropriate in the application of multivariate techniques to the real-world problems of petroleum well optimization

This book provides a comprehensive introduction and practical look at the concepts and techniques readers need to get the most out of their data in real-world, large-scale data mining projects. It also guides readers through the data-analytic thinking necessary for extracting useful knowledge and business value from the data. The book is based on the Soft Computing and Data Mining (SCDM-16) conference, which was held in Bandung, Indonesia on August 18th–20th 2016 to discuss the state of the art in soft computing techniques, and offer participants sufficient knowledge to tackle a wide range of complex systems. The scope of the conference is reflected in the book, which presents a balance of soft computing techniques and data mining approaches. The two constituents are introduced to the reader systematically and brought together using different combinations of applications and practices. It offers engineers, data analysts, practitioners, scientists and managers the insights into the concepts, tools and techniques employed, and as such enables them to better understand the design choice and options of soft computing techniques and data mining approaches that are necessary to thrive in this data-driven ecosystem.
