One cubic mile of oil (CMO) corresponds very closely to the world's current total annual consumption of crude oil. The world's total annual energy consumption - from all energy sources- is currently 3.0 CMO. By the middle of this century the world will need between 6 and 9 CMO of energy per year to provide for its citizens. Adequate energy is needed remove the scourge of poverty and provide food, clothing, and shelter for the people around the world, and more will be needed for measures to mitigate the potential effects of climate change such as building dikes and desalinating water. A Cubic Mile of Oil describes the various energy sources and how we use them, projects their future contributions, and delineates what it would take to develop them to annually produce a CMO from each of them. The requirement for additional energy in the future is so daunting that we will need to use all resources. We also examine how improved efficiency and conservation measures can reduce future demand substantially, and help distinguish approaches that make a significant impact as opposed to merely making us feel good. Use of CMO eliminates a multitude of units like tons of coal, gallons of oil, and cubic feet of gas; obviates the need for mind-numbing multipliers such as billions, trillions, and quadrillions; and replaces them with an easy-to-understand volumetric unit. It evokes a visceral response and allows experts, policy makers and the general public alike to form a mental picture of the magnitude of the challenge we face. In the absence of an appreciation of the scale of the problem, we risk squandering efforts and resources in pursuing options that will not meet tomorrow's global energy needs. We must make critical choices, and a common understandable language is essential for a sustained meaningful dialog.

The energy crisis of 1973-1974 was a pivotal event in twentieth-century American history. In the wake of the Vietnam War, it exposed the nation's economic vulnerability to foreign powers and precipitated an awareness of limits to the exploitation of natural resources. Further, it forced Americans and the American government in particular to think about the future of energy production and consumption in novel waysand made such thinking more imperative than ever. Twenty years later, questions about the energy crisis persist. What were the underlying causes of the crisis? What did we learn from it? How has it affected our current energy policies? Will another energy crisis occur in our future? In The Energy Crisis, David Lewis Feldman brings together a wide range of energy policy experts to address these questions and explore the appropriate role of governments and markets in ensuring a stable, economical, and sustainable energy supply. The authors locate the energy crisis in its historical context and find that, contrary to popular opinion, the Arab oil embargo was not responsible for the energy crisis. Rather, they contend, the crisis was caused by a series of short-sighted policy decisions meant to bring Americans cheaper energy and a cleaner environment. The contributors to The Energy Crisis conclude that the crisis was resolved by a combination of market forces and government intervention, and they offer perspectives on the need to sustain long-term interest in public/private partnerships in the face of short-term political and economic demands.

Despite most societies having recognized the vital role of entrepreneurship in driving economic progress, there is still a lack of understanding of the components of innovation, entrepreneurship, and growth and the relationship between microeconomic foundations of development and macroeconomic outcomes. Moreover, the impact of new venture competitiveness and performance, growth, and survival, the evolution of industries, and the location and influence of entrepreneurial activity all demand more advanced study and analysis. Insights into recent developments in the dynamics that support knowledge generation, diffusion, and commercialization through innovation and the role of the entrepreneur in the growth process will expand the understanding of this vital connection. The Importance of Entrepreneurship in Fostering Economic Progress is edited by Mohammed El Amine Abdelli, and is an essential read for academics, students, and researchers interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the connection between entrepreneurship driving economic progress. Leading scholars in various fields such as management, entrepreneurship, industrial economics, evolutionary economics, innovation and technological change, regional economics, and public policy have come together to examine and discuss the impact of entrepreneurship on employment, the crucial role of technological innovation on economic growth, and the impact of the entrepreneurial economy on public policy. By exploring the regulation design influencing knowledge creation, ownership, entry barriers, labor mobility, and inefficient financial markets, this book offers relevant policy implications for policymakers seeking to design effective entrepreneurship policies to foster economic development, employment, and global competitiveness.
