Focusing on the work of aesthetic and political revolutionaries of the inter-war period, Esther Leslie reveals how the animation of commodities can be studied as a journey into modernity in cinema. She looks afresh at the links between the Soviet Constructivists and the Bauhaus, for instance, and those between Walter Benjamin and cinematic abstraction. She also provides new interpretations of the writings of Siegfried Kracauer on animation, shows how Theodor Adorno's and Max Horkheimer's film viewing affected their intellectual development, and reconsiders Sergei Eisenstein's famous handshake with Mickey Mouse at Disney's Hyperion Studios in 1930.

Literatur oder, allgemeiner, Texte sind nicht erst seit dem 20. Jahrhundert inter- und transmedial ausgerichtet. Dennoch ist es sinnvoll, von einer medial reflexiven Literatur erst seit dem audiovisuellen Jahrhundert zu sprechen, dem des Films. Medientransformationen sind seitdem nicht allein paradigmatische Wechsel der Systeme, sondern auch Vervielfältigungen durch die Pluralität der medialen Träger. Neben allgemeineren Fragestellungen und theoretischen Bestimmungen steht das Wechselverhältnis von Text, Bild und Musik im Zentrum detaillierter Untersuchungen. Der intermedialen Performanz ist ein weiterer Teil des Bandes gewidmet, der schließlich die Brücke zu Film und Fernsehen schlägt. Das Buch geht zurück auf eine bilaterale Tagung in Ithaca, NY, an der Cornell University. Partner und Mitveranstalter war die Universität Bremen. Hinzu kamen in Fragen der Inter- und Transmedialität einschlägig ausgewiesene Wissenschaftler aus den USA und aus Deutschland. Enthalten sind vierzehn Beiträge in deutscher und sechs in englischer Sprache. Vereint werden ganz unterschiedliche Positionen der amerikanischen und europäischen Intermedialitätsforschung. Gerade diese Heterogenität ist eine Stärke der vorliegenden Publikation. Zusätzlich liefern die Herausgeber eine neuartige Kategorisierung und Begrifflichkeit und bedienen so ein weiter steigendes Interesse in den Literatur-, Medien- und Kulturwissenschaften. Die breite Palette der Themen von etablierter traditioneller Literatur und Konkreter Poesie bis zu neueren Genres wie Slam Poetry spricht auch interessierte Laien an. 34 Abbildungen illustrieren die Texte.

The Language of Objects sheds new light on the sub-genre of Greek descriptive epigram, focusing on deictic reference as a springboard to understand three different approaches to the materiality of texts: imagination-oriented deixis, pointing to referents conjured in the reader’s mind; ocular deixis, addressing perceivable referents; displaced deixis, underscoring the subjective response of readers/viewers. Uniquely combining overlooked verse-inscriptions and well-known literary and inscribed texts, which are freshly re-examined through a cognitive lens, this volume explores the evolution of deixis in descriptive epigrams dating from the pre-Hellenistic period to Late Antiquity. With its original analysis, the book pushes forward the study of Greek epigram and current understanding of deixis in ancient poetry.

The Kalpavrksa was composed in the 17th century by the Kashmirian author Sahib Kaul and is edited here in its original Sanskrit for the first time. During the editing process it became clear that the "text" of the Kalpavrksa is only the basis of an elaborate piece of verbal art, a crossword-like carmen cancellatum, which was originally displayed on a large cloth. Three of these are preserved today. The Kalpavrksa is not only the largest carmen cancellatum known in world literature, with its roughly thirty languages used for its intexts, it is also displays a baffling multilingualism.

Sardische Sprache, Literatur, Landeskunde, Note: 2,1, Freie Universität Berlin (Institut für Romanische Philologie), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In den 1950er und 1960er Jahren entwickelten sich in Brasilien und Italien neue Formen der Optischen Poesie unter Einfluss des wirtschaftlichen Aufschwungs und des Aufstiegs der Massenmedien. Diese Formen der Optischen Poesie, die Konkrete Poesie der Gruppe "Noigandres" in Brasilien und die Visuelle Poesie des "Gruppo 70" in Italien, sollen hier mit Hinblick auf ihre inhaltliche und formale Entwicklung im Zusammenhang mit gesellschaftspolitischen und kulturellen Veränderungen genauer betrachtet werden. Besonderes Augenmerk soll dabei auf die unterschiedliche sozio-kulturelle Dynamik beider Bewegungen gelegt werden. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit wird die Entwicklung der Optischen Poesie seit der Antike nachgezeichnet. Dabei wird im Besonderen auf die Tradition des Figurentextes eingegangen und auf neue Entwicklungen in der Verwendung und Bewertung von Bild und Schrift in der Literatur. Anschließend soll die Entwicklung der Optischen Poesie im 20. Jahrhundert, die unter dem immer stärker werdenden Einfluss der Massenmedien und neuer technischer Möglichkeiten wie z.B. Entwicklungen in der Typografie stand, genauer betrachtet werden. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit soll die Entstehung und Entwicklung der Poesie der Gruppe "Noigandres", die in engem Zusammenhang zum wirtschaftlichen und politischen Aufschwung in Brasilien stand, untersucht werden. Ferner wird auf den "Gruppo 70", die bedeutendste Bewegung der Visuellen Poesie in Italien, eingegangen. Entscheidend für die Entwicklung der Lyrik des "Gruppo 70" sind der Einfluss des boom economico sowie der stetig anwachsenden Konsumgesellschaft. Abschließend soll die sich in beiden Gruppen herausbildende Tendenz zur Inversion der Medienbotschaft, der semiologischen Guerilla, anhand von theoretischen Texten von Umberto Eco sowie den Vertretern der Gruppe Noigandres und des "Gruppo 70" analysiert werden. Damit einher geht die Idee der Entwicklung einer neuen Massenkultur, abseits des Mainstreams, auf die hier ebenfalls eingegangen werden soll. Dabei werden auch Kritikpunkte und Kontroversen erwähnt werden.

Landscape has been a key theme in world archaeology and trans-cultural art history over the last half century, particularly in the study of painting in art history and in all questions of human intervention and the placement of monuments in the natural world within archaeology. However, the representation of landscape has been rather less addressed in the scholarship of the archaeologically-accessed visual cultures of the ancient world. The kinds of reliefs, objects, and paintings discussed here have a significant purchase on matters concerned with landscape and space in the visual sphere, but were discovered within archaeological contexts and by means of excavation. Through case studies focused on the invention of wilderness imagery in ancient China, the relation of monuments to landscape in ancient Greece, the place of landscape painting in Mesoamerican Maya art, and the construction of sacred landscape across Eurasia between Stonehenge and the Silk Road via Pompeii, this book emphasises the importance of thinking about models of landscape in ancient art, as well as the value of comparative approaches in underlining core aspects of the topic. Notably, it explores questions of space, both actual and conceptual, including how space is configured through form and representation.
