Na obra Opúsculo Humanitário encontra-se a síntese do pensamento de Nísia Floresta sobre a educação feminina. Trata-se de uma coletânea de 62 artigos publicados na imprensa carioca após a sua primeira viagem à Europa. Os textos iniciais traçam um histórico da condição feminina em diversas civilizações, desde a antiguidade clássica ao século XIX. Para ela, o desenvolvimento material e intelectual de um país, está relacionado ao lugar ocupado pelas mulheres na sociedade. Sobre o Brasil, a educadora afirma que a instrução das meninas significaria o acesso da nação brasileira no rol das civilizações modernas. O antiescravismo de Nísia Floresta evidencia-se também em suas referências às relações no âmbito doméstico e o seu reflexo na educação de meninas. Segundo ela, o tratamento rude dado aos escravos e até às amas de leite por seus senhores era um péssimo exemplo de “revoltante ingratidão”. Na última parte do livro, a autora critica as escolas e o ensino no Brasil, valendo-se de dados oficiais, posicionando-se contrariamente ao governo sobre a falta de direcionamento educacional, sobretudo na educação de meninas.
