Oral health is essential for maintaining systematic health. A good oral health can decrease the risk of various systemic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Oral diseases are linked to other diseases of the body due to the natural reaction of the human body towards harmful stimuli, which is known as inflammatory response. It is the body's warning response towards viruses and infections. The common symptoms of inflammation include pain, swelling, redness, heat and limited function. Rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, gum diseases and diabetes all have similar type of inflammatory response. Severe gum disease can increase systemic inflammation, which develops in the background and may turn into severe systemic diseases. Oral bacteria trigger the formation of C-reactive proteins (CRPs), which cause inflammation resulting in the formation of clots in the arteries, thereby increasing the risk of stroke and heart diseases. The topics included in this book on oral health and systemic diseases are of utmost significance and bound to provide incredible insights to readers. It will serve as a valuable source of reference for graduate and post graduate students.

Oral health is known to be associated with general health. Much oral significance is closely related to systemic diseases. There are several categories of systemic patients for whom specific needs of dental care and counselling are needed. In some instances, so as to reach the optimal total health care, a combination of medical and dental care is necessary. Furthermore, poor oral hygiene itself is a risk factor for systemic diseases such as periodontal status which can increase the severity of heart disease and diabetes. Oral hygiene assessments are important so as to eliminate predisposing factors for oral complications such as nasopharynx cancer, immune-compromised disease, diabetes and valvular heart diseases in patients. Since early assessment can reduce both the incidence and severity of oral complications, some early appropriate interventions can be engaged according to the individual's treatment needs. It is necessary to carry out consistency in the treatment by including periodically follow up and appropriate counselling to the patients, so they may be able to take care of themselves up to the desired outcome. This book focuses on the oral health care for specific groups of the systemic patients i.e. diabetes, head and neck cancers, cardiovascular disease, and AIDS.

I am delighted to see the appearance of the first comprehensive atlas recognizing the important relationship between periodontal and systemic health and disease. The atlas is not intended to cover the new areas of in terest in relation to periodontal health and cardiac and other disease, but rather to demonstrate the systemic diseases that manifest to the periodon tist and hygienist. The atlas thus covers a vast range of systemic disorders that may present with gingival or periodontal lesions and highlights the importance of the periodontal and oral medicine teams in diagnosing and managing patients with sometimes complex medical problems. The authors, Professor George Laskaris and Professor Crispian Scully, are both active clinicians, teachers and researchers in oral medicine, with wide experience and special interest in the oral medicine/periodontal interface and both have published widely in their fields. I welcome this contribution to the advancement of care for the patient with periodontal disease. Jan Lindhe Professor Emeritus of Periodontology University of Gothenburg, Sweden ~ The periodontium is a part of the oral tissues of great interest to dentists and particularly to the periodontal team. The importance has now been recognized to extend beyond local disorders to a wide range of conditions that may affect periodontal health.

This book provides a comprehensive review of the assessment and management of older people’s oral health care needs. Discussing recent initiatives to emphasize oral health promotion and prevention, the book describes improvements in pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches for special populations in geriatrics and illuminates the role of barriers to oral health care for older people. Divided into three sections, the book first explores aging and oral health, including age-related changes, epidemiology, nutrition, dysphagia, aspiration pneumonia, xerostomia and hyposalivation, management of periodontal disease and caries, systemic diseases that influence oral health, and considerations for chronic orofacial pain. The second section illuminates the ways in which frailty and other geriatric syndromes influence oral health care in older adults with a special focus on frailty, dementia, delirium and depression, and the delivery of oral health care to vulnerable geriatric populations in long-term care, home care, palliative care, and hospice. Lastly, the book addresses inequalities in the oral health of older minority populations, the disproportionate burden of oral disease and tooth loss, the contribution of these issues to further complications in comorbidities, the association of extended health literacy and periodontal disease, and the social and cultural conditions that might be altered or improved by healthcare programs and health policies. Oral Health and Aging is a useful book written by an international group of experts and designed to educate geriatricians, primary care physicians, nurses, dentists, dental hygienists, speech and language pathologists, dietitians, and health policy advocates.
