"Embedded in modern print culture, biblical scholars have been projecting the assumptions and concepts of print culture onto the texts they interpret. In the ancient world from which those texts originate, however, literacy was confined to only a small number of educated scribes. And, as recent research has shown, even the literate scribes learned texts by repeated recitation, while the nonliterate ordinary people had little if any direct contact with written scrolls. The texts that had taken distinctive form, moreover, were embedded in a broader and deeper cultural repertoire cultivated orally in village communities as well as in scribal circles. Only recently have some scholars struggled to appreciate texts that later became ""biblical"" in their own historical context of oral communication. Exploration of texts in oral performance--whether as scribal teachers' instruction to their protŽgŽs or as prophetic speeches of Jesus of Nazareth or as the performance of a whole Gospel story in a community of Jesus-loyalists--requires interpreters to relinquish their print-cultural assumptions. Widening exploration of texts in oral performance in other fields offers exciting new possibilities for allowing those texts to come alive again in their community contexts as they resonated with the cultural tradition in which they were embedded."

Task-based language learning research has been dominated by an invariable format confined to investigating effect patterns of tasks on language performance irrespective of the role of individual differences in this effect equation. The book revisits this research oversight through an empirical examination of the joint effect of task conditions and goal orientations not only on language learners' oral performance and but also on their speaking development. Building on a processing-based framework, analysis of results elicited by experimental narrative tasks revealed a considerable scope of goal-related variability in language learning context. Such variation had a direct bearing on language learners' processing biases with regard to the quality of their performance and speaking development. The book also provides insights into the ways language learning practitioners grade and sequence oral tasks based on an informed understanding of learners' goal orientations.

Phillips draws on his twenty-five-year, five-thousand-client experience with the Pennsylvania State University Reticence Program to present a new theory of modification of "inept" communication behavior. That experience has convinced Phillips that communication is arbitrary and rulebound rather than a process of inspiration. He demonstrates that communication problems can be described as errors that can be detected and classified in order to fit a remediation pattern. Regardless of the source of error, the remedy is to train the individual to avoid or eliminate errors--thus, orderly procedure will result in competent performance. Inept communicators must be made aware of the obligations and constraints imposed by deep structures that require us to achieve a degree of formal order in our language, without which our discourse becomes incomprehensible.
