Christchurch, nestled on New Zealand's South Island, captivates with its blend of historical charm and modern vibrancy. Known as Ōtautahi in Māori, the city embodies a rich cultural tapestry shaped by its indigenous roots and diverse immigrant influences. From its picturesque landscapes to its resilient community spirit, Christchurch stands as a testament to perseverance and transformation in the face of adversity. Founded in 1850 by the Canterbury Association, Christchurch was envisioned as a haven of English charm in the Southern Hemisphere. This heritage is still evident today in the city's architectural landmarks, such as the iconic Christchurch Cathedral and the neo-Gothic Arts Centre. These buildings tell stories of the past, reflecting the city's colonial history and the pioneering spirit of its founders. However, Christchurch is not just a city bound by history; it is also a hub of innovation and creativity. Following the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, the city has undergone a remarkable rejuvenation. This period of rebuilding has sparked a renaissance in urban design, with innovative projects like the Christchurch Adventure Park and the Ōtākaro Avon River Precinct reshaping the cityscape. Moreover, Christchurch is renowned for its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. The city embraces green initiatives, from its extensive network of parks and gardens to its emphasis on eco-friendly architecture and transportation. Visitors and residents alike are drawn to Christchurch's dedication to preserving its natural beauty while embracing a sustainable future. Beyond its physical attributes, Christchurch is a city that celebrates culture and community. The annual Christchurch Arts Festival and vibrant street art scene showcase the city's creative spirit. Meanwhile, local markets and festivals highlight Christchurch's diverse culinary scene and artisanal craftsmanship. Christchurch is a city of contrasts and resilience, where history meets innovation and tradition blends with modernity. Whether you're exploring its historic landmarks, indulging in its culinary delights, or simply enjoying its natural wonders, Christchurch offers a unique and enriching experience for every visitor. Join us as we embark on a journey through Ōtautahi, where past and present converge in harmony.

Wild animals have been housed in zoos and aquariums for 5,000 years, fascinating people living in virtually every society. Today, these institutions are at a new milestone in their history. This second edition of Zoo and Aquarium History takes the reader on a journey through the transition of private collections to menageries, to zoos, then zoological gardens, and more recently conservation centers and sanctuaries. Under the direction of Vernon N. Kisling, an expert in zoo history, an international team of authors has thoroughly updated the only comprehensive, global history of animal collections, menageries, zoos, and aquariums. The resulting book documents the continuum of efforts in maintaining wild animal collections from ancient civilizations through today, explaining how modern zoos have developed their mission statements around the core aims of conservation, education, research and recreation. This new edition pulls together regional information, including new chapters on zoological gardens of Canada, Latin America, China, Israel, the Middle East, and New Zealand, along with the cultural aspects of each region to provide a foundation upon which further research can be based. It presents a chronological listing of the world's zoos and aquariums and features many never-before published photographs. Sidebars present supplementary information on pertinent personalities, events, and wildlife conservation issues. The original Appendix has been expanded to include over 1,200 zoos and aquariums, providing an invaluable resource. This is an extensive, chronological introduction to the subject, highlighting the published and archival resources for those who want to know more.

“No patient going through cancer just wants ‘support’. At best, they would like the huge, scary roller-coaster called ‘treatment’ to stop and let them off. At least, they would like to meet someone else on the ride who can give words to the experience and make some sense of it all. Jen McDonald is that person.” - Dr Michael Copeman, Jen’s oncologist -------- “I’m sorry to say you have breast cancer – an Infiltrating Lobular Carcinoma to be exact,” said her doctor delivering the tough news right before Christmas 2013. “And there’s three ways we deal with breast cancer – cut, poison and burn.” Such was the start of Jennifer McDonald’s ‘Big Breast Adventure’, the name she gave to a series of blogs penned while going through two years of treatment. My Big Breast Adventure or How I Found the Dalai Lama in My Letterbox is a compilation of these posts, hailed as a must read for anyone facing a life or health crisis and those who care for them. ---- “This is a gorgeous book. Advances In Communication Research To Reduce Childhood Obesity written by Jerome D. Williams and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-02-12 with Medical categories.

Rates of childhood obesity are alarmingly high and increasing each year. Studies have shown that obese children are more likely to become obese adults and are likely to suffer with numerous health consequences like coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, and Type II diabetes, among others. Studies also indicate that television viewing and exposure to advertising for food products influences children's attitudes toward, food preferences and food purchase requests for foods with low nutritional value. It is important to better understand the role of media in childhood obesity and to learn how media may be used to address this issue in a positive way. This book focuses on communication and media research that can have an impact on reducing childhood obesity. Emphasis is placed on topics related to how the media communicate health-related messages about food, nutrition and diet that influence childhood obesity. Particular emphasis is on the new media, given the fact that media now have more central roles in socializing today’s children and youth than ever before. Advertising and marketing messages reach young consumers through a variety of vehicles – broadcast and cable television, radio, magazines, computers through the Internet, music, cell phones – and in many different venues – homes, schools, child-care settings, grocery stores, shopping malls, theaters, sporting events, and even airports. In addition, given the disparity in obesity rates between children of color and the general population, special attention is given to research on media targeting these populations.
