This problem book contains exercises for courses in differential equations and calculus of variations at universities and technical institutes. It is designed for non-mathematics students and also for scientists and practicing engineers who feel a need to refresh their knowledge. The book contains more than 260 examples and about 1400 problems to be solved by the students — much of which have been composed by the authors themselves. Numerous references are given at the end of the book to furnish sources for detailed theoretical approaches, and expanded treatment of applications.

This collection of original articles and surveys written by leading experts in their fields is dedicated to Arrigo Cellina and James A. Yorke on the occasion of their 65th birthday. The volume brings the reader to the border of research in differential equations, a fast evolving branch of mathematics that, besides being a main subject for mathematicians, is one of the mathematical tools most used both by scientists and engineers.

Modelling with Ordinary Differential Equations: A Comprehensive Approach aims to provide a broad and self-contained introduction to the mathematical tools necessary to investigate and apply ODE models. The book starts by establishing the existence of solutions in various settings and analysing their stability properties. The next step is to illustrate modelling issues arising in the calculus of variation and optimal control theory that are of interest in many applications. This discussion is continued with an introduction to inverse problems governed by ODE models and to differential games. The book is completed with an illustration of stochastic differential equations and the development of neural networks to solve ODE systems. Many numerical methods are presented to solve the classes of problems discussed in this book. Features: Provides insight into rigorous mathematical issues concerning various topics, while discussing many different models of interest in different disciplines (biology, chemistry, economics, medicine, physics, social sciences, etc.) Suitable for undergraduate and graduate students and as an introduction for researchers in engineering and the sciences Accompanied by codes which allow the reader to apply the numerical methods discussed in this book in those cases where analytical solutions are not available

The calculus of variations is one of the oldest subjects in mathematics, yet is very much alive and is still evolving. Besides its mathematical importance and its links to other branches of mathematics, such as geometry or differential equations, it is widely used in physics, engineering, economics and biology. This book serves both as a guide to the expansive existing literature and as an aid to the non-specialist — mathematicians, physicists, engineers, students or researchers — in discovering the subject's most important problems, results and techniques. Despite the aim of addressing non-specialists, mathematical rigor has not been sacrificed; most of the theorems are either fully proved or proved under more stringent conditions. In this new edition, the chapter on regularity has been significantly expanded and 27 new exercises have been added. The book, containing a total of 103 exercises with detailed solutions, is well designed for a course at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The Inverse Problem Of The Calculus Of Variations For Ordinary Differential Equations written by Ian Anderson and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Mathematics categories.
This monograph explores various aspects of the inverse problem of the calculus of variations for systems of ordinary differential equations. The main problem centres on determining the existence and degree of generality of Lagrangians whose system of Euler-Lagrange equations coicides with a given system of ordinary differential equations. The authors rederive the basic necessary and sufficient conditions of Douglas for second order equations and extend them to equations of higher order using methods of the variational bicomplex of Tulcyjew, Vinogradov, and Tsujishita. The authors present an algorithm, based upon exterior differential systems techniques, for solving the inverse problem for second order equations. a number of new examples illustrate the effectiveness of this approach.
