Since the first days of community life, human beings have used different plant species for food, fodder, construction materials, fuel, dyes and treatment of diseases, among other applications. The Lamiaceae family is one of the most important plant families that includes many species that people use for various purposes in their daily life. Origanum contains several species commonly used as spices and tea for medicinal purposes, and is one of the most commercially important genera within the family Lamiaceae. In this book, the genus Origanum is introduced in seven chapters in detail. Taxonomy of Origanum is given in the first chapter, pollen characteristics are given in the second chapter, phylogeny, biogeography and character evolution are given in the third chapter, cultivated species, suitable varieties for agriculture, yield and quality characteristics, and harvesting processes are given in the fourth chapter, secondary metabolites (monoterpenes, phenolics, flavonoids, diterpenes etc.) are given in the fifth chapter, biological activities (antimicrobial, antiviral, antifungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antidiabetic activity) are given in the sixth chapter, and finally the traditional uses and prescriptions, pharmacology, commercial and economic importance of the genus are given in the seventh chapter.

"Chapter 1 focuses on taxonomic, cultivation and the pharmacological and other uses of Origanum species. In Chapter 2, Origanum's role in synthesising the metal nanoparticles such as titanium dioxide, palladium, silver, gold, palladium nanoparticles supported on magnetic graphene oxide has been discussed in detail. Hence, researchers are using Origanum as a precursor in plant-mediated synthesis. In the last chapter, the authors discuss Origanum, the Turkish spice, which has a history dated back to centuries. This herb has found wide applications due to the presence of primary and secondary metabolites"--

This is meant to be the 10th volume of the series Medicinal and Aromatic Plants of the World. Similarly, to the previous volumes, the work will deal -in a monographic form- with MAPs characteristic/famous or simply known of Turkey, a large country that is connecting Europe with Asia. Turkey has extremely rich and varied topographic/ecologic conditions. As a result, the flora of Turkey abounds in an astonishingly great number of endemic MAP species. Traditional, present and possible prospective uses will be discussed. Scientific and technological achievements will be equally presented. Briefly, the volume is aimed to look carefully at our present knowledge of this vast interdisciplinary domain of medicinal and aromatic plants with a focus on Turkey. In the era of global climate change and Covid-pandemics, building on the huge Turkish traditions, the proposed volume of the series is expected to make an important contribution to the better knowledge and understanding of the MAP wealth of the World.

As this difficult genus was never before monographed, a revisional study was much needed. The data presented are mainly based on the study of herbarium specimens and in some cases of living ones. The picture was completed, as far as possible, with data from various literature sources. A short survey is given of the taxonomic history of Origanum, which goes back as far as Linnaeus, and shows that genus and species concepts of various authors have much differed. A morphological outline of Origanum is given, from which it can be concluded that most generic characters are rather variable. Origanum is characterized in the following ways. Medium sized, subshrubby Labiatae, rich in volatile oils, with subsessile, ovate, glandular punctate leaves and paniculate inflorescences; few flo wered verticillasters arranged in (dense) spikes with distinct, often coloured, bracts; calyces variable: 5-toothed, subregular or 2-lipped or I-lipped, with developed or reduced teeth; corollas 2-lipped, sometimes saccate or flattened.
