Founding The Far West written by David Alan Johnson and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12-22 with History categories.

Founding the Far West is an ambitious and vividly written narrative of the early years of statehood and statesmanship in three pivotal western territories. Johnson offers a model example of a new approach to history that is transforming our ideas of how America moved west, one that breaks the mold of "regional" and "frontier" histories to show why Western history is also American history. Johnson explores the conquest, immigration, and settlement of the first three states of the western region. He also investigates the building of local political customs, habits, and institutions, as well as the socioeconomic development of the region. While momentous changes marked the Far West in the later nineteenth century, distinctive local political cultures persisted. These were a legacy of the pre-Civil War conquest and settlement of the regions but no less a reflection of the struggles for political definition that took place during constitutional conventions in each of the three states. At the center of the book are the men who wrote the original constitutions of these states and shaped distinctive political cultures out of the common materials of antebellum American culture. Founding the Far West maintains a focus on the individual experience of the constitution writers—on their motives and ambitions as pioneers, their ideological intentions as authors of constitutions, and the successes and failures, after statehood, of their attempts to give meaning to the constitutions they had produced.

Oregon A History written by Gordon B. Dodds and has been published by W. W. Norton & Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1977-11-17 with History categories.

To many Americans, Oregon is an idyllic, fruitful garden on the northwestern shore of a troubled urban nation. But, as author Gordon B. Dodds explains in this thoughtful history, behind that image lies the story of a state that has retained many of the conservative values of its first settlers while accommodating the forces of national development. Generations of Oregonians have searched out and found a moderate path where quiet competence, self-restraint, loyalty, and trust have been the greatest virtues. Today, Oregonians can be proud that other Americans look to their state "for inspiration in responsible government, civil personal relationships, and respect for the natural world." Whether they look with nostalgia or anticipation, the future will judge.

Between 1800 and the Civil War, the American West evolved from a region to territories to states. This book depicts the development of the antebellum West from the perspective of a resident of the Western frontier. What happened in the West in the lead-up to and during the American Civil War? The Civil War and the West: The Frontier Transformed provides a clear and complete answer to this question. The work succinctly overviews the West during the antebellum period from 1800 to 1862, supplying thematic chapters that explain how key elements and characteristics of the West created conflict and division that differed from those in the East during the Civil War. It looks at how these issues influenced the military, settlement, and internal territorial conflicts about statehood in each region, and treats the Cherokee and other Indian nations as important actors in the development of a national narrative.
