This book from the Materials Research Society emphasizes the broad scientific and technological interest in applications of organic materials to optoelectronics and optics. Materials synthesis, modification, and characterization from the nanoscale to the mesoscale to the macroscale are discussed. Approaches for modeling and theoretical analysis of these materials are highlighted. Also featured in the volume are a keynote talk from Professor Alan Heeger, 2000 Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, as well as five papers from the Microphotonics symposium that address photonic crystals involving organic materials. Additional topics include: metal/organic interfaces - electronic structure and charge injection; photonic/nonlinear optical materials and devices; design and synthesis of electroluminescent materials; applications in displays; electrochromic polymers/sensors; organic transistors; photovoltaics and photodetectors - transport in bulk organic materials and novel patterning schemes.

An introduction to the interdisciplinary subject of molecular electronics, revised and updated The revised second edition of Organic and Molecular Electronics offers a guide to the fabrication and application of a wide range of electronic devices based around organic materials and low-cost technologies. Since the publication of the first edition, organic electronics has greatly progressed, as evidenced by the myriad companies that have been established to explore the new possibilities. The text contains an introduction into the physics and chemistry of organic materials, and includes a discussion of the means to process the materials into a form (in most cases, a thin film) where they can be exploited in electronic and optoelectronic devices. The text covers the areas of application and potential application that range from chemical and biochemical sensors to plastic light emitting displays. The updated second edition reflects the recent progress in both organic and molecular electronics and: Offers an accessible resource for a wide range of readers Contains a comprehensive text that covers topics including electrical conductivity, optical phenomena, electroactive organic compounds, tools for molecular electronics and much more Includes illustrative examples based on the most recent research Presents problems at the end of each chapter to help reinforce key points Written mainly for engineering students, Organic and Molecular Electronics: From Principles to Practice provides an updated introduction to the interdisciplinary subjects of organic electronics and molecular electronics with detailed examples of applications.

The field of organic semiconductors has seen much development in the past years. Displays based on light-emitting diodes made of small organic molecules as well as polymers, have recently been commercialized. Other applications, such as electronic circuits for tagging, efficient photovoltaic devices and biosensors, have already been demonstrated. This volume brings together a "wish list" of leading researchers in the fields of chemistry, physics and technology of organic devices. Novel device concepts such as charge-generation layers, metal complexes and the use of heterojunctions are presented and should lead to further improvement in the efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes. In the field of organic transistors, major progress is reported on the charge-transport properties of organic semiconductors; mobilities up to 5cm2/Vs are reported for pentacene-based transistors. High mobility n-type materials, which enable the development of ambipolar organic electronic circuits, are also discussed. And new approaches to fully printable displays on substrates, such as textiles and paper, are presented. These may lead the way to new applications of organic optoelectronic devices.

Organic Electronics written by Stephen R. Forrest and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-22 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This textbook provides a basic understanding of the principles of the field of organic electronics, through to their applications in organic devices. Useful for both students and practitioners, it is a teaching text as well as an invaluable resource that serves as a jumping-off point for those interested in learning, working and innovating in this rapidly growing field. Organics serve as a platform for very low cost and high performance optoelectronic and electronic devices that cover large areas, are lightweight, and can be both flexible and conformable to fit onto irregularly shaped surfaces such as foldable smart phones. Organic electronics is at the core of the global organic light emitting device (OLED) display industry. OLEDs also have potential uses as lighting sources. Other emerging organic electronic applications include organic solar cells, and organic thin film transistors useful in medical and a range of other sensing, memory and logic applications. This book is a product of both one and two semester courses that have been taught over a period of more than two decades. It is divided into two sections. Part I, Foundations, lays down the fundamental principles of the field of organic electronics. It is assumed that the reader has an elementary knowledge of quantum mechanics, and electricity and magnetism. A background knowledge of organic chemistry is not required. Part II, Applications, focuses on organic electronic devices. It begins with a discussion of organic thin film deposition and patterning, followed by chapters on organic light emitters, detectors, and thin film transistors. The last chapter describes several devices and phenomena that are not covered in the previous chapters, since they lie somewhat outside of the current mainstream of the field, but are nevertheless important.
