Diploma Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Industrial Management, grade: 1,3, LMU Munich (Information, Organisation und Management / und CDTM), language: English, abstract: "The most significant factor in America, leading to high production at low cost, is efficient management." This quotation is not from a longitudinal, empirical study, but it is stated by the British Productivity Council in the context of the Marshal Plan - the Anglo - American productivity mission in 1951. Hence, one question might be: Is there indeed a strong link between management practices and firm performance? A further question might be: How American management practices rank compared with European or Asian management practices? And what role plays organizational structure on firm performance? Are there interacted effects between management practices and organizational structure? Insights into the impact of management practices and organizational structure on firm performance are mainly based on theories. Consequently, there is a strong need to measure management practices and organizational structure across countries and cultures to verify theoretical hypotheses with empirical data. This paper sheds some empirical light on these topics as well as on the distribution of management practices and organizational structures across countries and industries. This book is based on a unique data set with more than 3500 management interviews to document and analyze the influence of management practices and organizational structure on firm performance (Bloom 2010). Furthermore, the role and impact of organizational change is obtained and compared to a strand of literature. This book relates to a number of strands in the literature. It builds on and extends the paper of Nick Bloom and John van Reenen (2007) "Measuring and explaining management practices across countries and industries." Furthermore, this paper is related to the paper of Marianne Bertrand and Antoinette Sc

Organization Structures: Theory and Design, Analysis and Prescription describes how to organize people to achieve a desired outcome. This is accomplished by establishing sets of rules from "real world" organization contexts. Moreover, the development of these rules within "real world" contexts means that the rules must be true, general, operational, technically sound, and easy to use. With an understanding of rules and the processes of their use, organization structures can be identified, which in turn form the basis of a theoretical framework. This book discusses, examines, and demonstrates the interrelationship of the design rules, their theoretical use within these organization structures, along with their practical implications. Throughout the book, an extended example of the Masters Brewing Corporation (MBC) is used to illustrate the conceptual material and to make the implications of the organizational analysis explicitly concrete.

The Modern Firm written by John Roberts and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-09-06 with Business & Economics categories.

Business firms around the world are experimenting with new organizational designs, changing their formal architectures, their routines and processes, and their corporate cultures as they seek to improve their current performance and their growth prospects. In the process they are changing the scope of their business operations, redrawing their organization charts, redefining the allocation of decision-making authority and responsibility, revamping the mechanisms for motivating and rewarding people, reconsidering which activities to conduct in-house and which to out-source, redesigning their information systems, and seeking to alter the shared beliefs, values and norms that their people hold. In this book, John Roberts argues that there are predictable, necessary relationships among these changes that will improve performance and growth. The organizations that are successful will establish patterns of fit among the elements of their organizational designs, their competitive strategies and the external environment in which they operate and will go about this in a holistic manner. The Modern Firm develops powerful conceptual frameworks for analyzing the interrelations between organizational design features, competitive strategy and the business environment. Written in a non-technical language, the book is nevertheless based on rigorous modeling and draws on numerous examples from eighteenth century fur trading companies to such modern firms such as BP and Nokia. Finally the book explores why these developments are happening now, pointing to the increase in global competition and changes in technology. Written by one of the world's leading economists and experts on business strategy and organization, The Modern Firm provides new insights into the changes going on in business today and will be of interest to academics, students and managers alike.

This study investigates the effect of entrepreneurial orientation of firms on their performance considering the moderating role of organization structure in firms of the Kaveh industrial city. The executive managers of these firms (approximately 250 people) have formed the statistical society of the study and stratified random sampling method has been employed for sampling. By using Cochran formula, 152 people were selected as sample size. The analysis of collected data was performed using hierarchical regression test and evaluation of structural equations model was done by using AMOS 20 software. Furthermore, the technical specifications of research questionnaire (index reliability, exploratory factor analysis, convergent validity and discriminant validity) were inspected by Smart PLS 2.0 software. Research results, on the one hand, confirm the positive and significant effect of entrepreneurial orientation on firm performance, and on the other hand, show that organization structure significantly moderates the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and performance. The findings of current study can help the managers of selected companies to improve their firm performance and also to identify the weaknesses and strengths of their organizational structure design in order to encourage employees to engage in entrepreneurial activities.

Establishing a corporate governance strategy that promotes the efficient use of organisational resources is instrumental in the economic growth of a country, as well as the successful management of firms. This book reviews existing literature and identifies board structural features as key variables of an effective corporate governance system, establishing a multi-theoretical model that links Board structural characteristics with firm performance. It then, using a comprehensive empirical study of 265 companies listed on the Karachi Stock exchange, tests this conceptual model. This research serves as a significant milestone, reflecting the socio-economic setting of emerging economies, and highlighting the need for the corporate sector in emerging markets to move away from a 'tick-box' culture. It argues that the sector needs to implement corporate governance as a tool to mitigate business risks; appoint and empower non-executive directors to achieve an effective monitoring of management; and establish their own ethical and governance principles, applicable to the Board of Directors. Based on an extensive data base, collected painstakingly over five years, this book offers new insights and conceptual framework for further research in this area. Given the breadth and width of the research, it is a useful source of future reference for students, researchers and policy makers.

This book focuses on organizational development for increased business performance. The text and models cover process management, leading to change management and organizational development. Burtonshaw-Gunn and Salameh show that process implementation in any business depends on two key factors. First, the role of knowledge management in organizational and individual improvement is vital. Secondly, performance management for individual employees, and collaboration between organizations can bring about lasting change and development. Each chapter presents a balance between the organization’s and individual performance commitment, and features helpful pointers to further sources of information. Using the authors’ knowledge and practical experience across a range of organizations and cultural settings this publication depicts the systematic efforts required for organizational development. This covers the following five major elements, each with a dedicated chapter describing in detail the tools and techniques necessary for successful performance improvement: Process Management Change Management and Organizational Development People-Focused Performance Management Knowledge Management and Performance Organizational Performance through Tactical and Strategic Partnering Essential Tools for Organizational Performance not only brings these inter-related topics together in a logical way but allows each to be considered as a stand-alone performance strategy. It fully references the original source of the models used and where additional in-depth information may be found.
