Few areas of chemistry have developed so rapidly, and contributed so widely, not only to the fundamental understanding of the nature of the chemical bond but also to its commercial application, as the organometallic chemistry of the transition metals. Central to this development was the discovery of ferrocene and the recognition of the sandwich structure. This volume highlights the key structural types of metal complexes with unsaturated organic ligands: complexes with alkenes, alkynes, cyclopentadienyls, allyls and arenes.

"This series of short texts provides accessible accounts of a range of essential topics in chemistry. Written with the needs of the student in mind, the Oxford Chemistry Primers offer just the right level of detail for undergraduate study, and will be invaluable as a source of material commonly presented in lecture courses yet not adequately covered in existing texts. All the basic principles and facts in a particular area are presented in a clear and straightforward style, to produce concise yet comprehensive accounts of topics covered in both core and specialist courses." "The interaction of transition metals with unsaturated organic molecules has led to fundamental insights in the nature of the chemical bond which, in turn, have provided the basis of important present-day applications such as transition metal mediated synthesis or homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. This slim volume outlines the chemistry and discusses the bonding in some of the most important classes of organometallic compounds: the complexes of transition metals with [pi]-ligands such as alkenes, alkynes, arenes, and cyclopentadienyl and allyl ligands. The material covered follows on from Organometallics 1 which covers the chemistry of complexes with metal-carbon [sigma]-bonds. Synthetic and reactivity aspects of each class of compounds are illustrated with pertinent examples from the recent chemical literature. Highlighted excursions relate the fundamental chemistry to current synthetic or catalytic applications."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Transition Metal Arene Complexes In Organic Synthesis And Catalysis written by Peter E. Kündig and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-09-03 with Science categories.

Metal-arene pi-complexes show a rich and varied chemistry. The metal adds a third dimension to the planar aromatic compounds and coordination of a metal to an arene thus not only altering the reactivity of ring-carbons and substituents but also makes possible reactions that lead to chiral non-racemic products. This book, organized in nine chapters and written by leading scientists in the field provides the reader with an up-to-date treatise on the subject organized according to reaction type and use. It covers the wide spectrum of arene activation: from the electrophilic activation of h6-bound arene by pi-Lewis acid metal complex fragments, to reactions of nucleophilic h2-coordinated arene complexes. The preparation of complexes is detailed, as are the scope, limitations and challenges of reactions in contemporary pi-arene metal chemistry with special attention given to asymmetric transformations. The emphasis of the book is on transformations of interest to organic synthesis and on the use of the complexes as catalysts or as chiral ligands. The book is written for academic and industrial researchers in organic, organometallic, and inorganic chemistry as well as for advanced chemistry students.

Organometallic chemistry belongs to the most rapidly developing area of chemistry today. This is due to the fact that research dealing with the structure of compounds and chemical bonding has been greatly intensified in recent years. Additionally, organometallic compounds have been widely utilized in catalysis, organic synthesis, electronics, etc. This book is based on my lectures concerning basic organometallic chemistry for fourth and fifth year chemistry students and on my lectures concerning advanced organometallic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis for Ph.D. graduate students. Many recent developments in the area of organometallic chemistry as weIl as homogeneous catalysis are presented. Essential research results dealing with a given class of organometallic compounds are discussed briefly. Results of physicochemical research methods of various organometallic compounds as weIl as their synthesis, properties, structures, reactivities, and applications are discussed more thoroughly. The selection of tabulated data is arbitrary because, often, it has been impossible to avoid omissions. Nevertheless, these data can be very helpful in understanding properties of organometaIlic compounds and their reactivities. All physical data are given in SI units; the interatomic distances are given in pm units in figures and tables. I am indebted to Professor S. A. Duraj for translating and editing this book. His remarks, discussions, and suggestions are greatly appreciated. I also express gratitude to Virginia E. Duraj for editing and proofreading.
