Las recientes investigaciones en arqueología, paleoantropología y genética han cambiado nuestra manera de entender el devenir evolutivo de nuestra especie Homo sapiens. Los nuevos datos científicos nos acercan a la visión de un origen muy antiguo, que ronda los 300.000 años y que, paradójicamente, enlaza con algunas ideas más clásicas de la evolución humana, la del multirregionalismo. El modelo vigente de un origen africano relativamente reciente y geográficamente muy localizado está en entredicho. Cuáles son los rasgos que nos definen como especie, cuándo y cómo surgen, qué nos hace tan singulares, son cuestiones en revisión. Los distintos eventos de hibridación detectados entre especies humanas paleolíticas nos hacen reflexionar sobre conceptos básicos tales como el de especie. Así, la noción de razas humanas queda cada vez más en entredicho a la luz de los innumerables flujos génicos ocurridos entre poblaciones. La dispersión de estas poblaciones por los continentes de la Tierra en sucesivos pulsos, el encuentro de poblaciones residentes con aquellas recién llegadas, la adaptación biológica y cultural a los diferentes entornos ecológicos y el impacto de los cambios climáticos establecen un complejo mosaico espaciotemporal.
