Jethro Tull was one of the truly innovative rock bands to emerge from the late 1960s. At their peak the idiosyncratic group, fronted by multi-instrumentalist Ian Anderson, resembled a troupe of roving English minstrels. Crafting a signature progressive rock sound that resisted easy categorization, they were often derided by critics as too British, too eccentric, too theatrical. Over the span of a decade, Tull released a string of sublime albums featuring intricate compositions in a wide range of musical styles, with little regard for the showbiz maxim "give the public what it wants." Focusing on the years 1968-1980, this history includes insider accounts based on exclusive interviews with key members and rare photographs from Ian Anderson's personal collection.

Formed in 1968, Jethro Tull are one of rock's most enduring bands. Their 1971 album Aqualung, with its provocative lyrical content and continuous music shifts, is Tull's most successful and most misunderstood record. Here, music professor and fan Allan Moore tackles the album on a track-by-track basis, looking at Ian Anderson's lyrics and studying the complex structures and arrangements of these classic songs.

The year 1972 saw the release of Jethro Tull's iconic album, Thick As A Brick. A song spanning two whole sides of the LP with no gaps in between, Thick As A Brick was unusual even by so-called progressive rock standards at the time. Ironically, even though band leader Ian Anderson joked that the album was intended as "a bit of a spoof", it has gone on to be remembered as a masterpiece of the genre nearly fifty years later. In this book, music author Laura Shenton MA LLCM DipRSL offers an in depth perspective on Thick As A Brick from a range of angles including how the album came to be, how it was presented and received at the time (live as well as on record), and what it means in terms of Jethro Tull's legacy today. As the author explains: "Basically, the book covers how the album was made, what was going on with the music in terms of the artist's intentions, how it did musically and commercially and what happened next." The narrative is essentially driven by contemporary interviews with the artists with small bits of music theory where relevant... in some cases they delve into the structure / key signatures / time signatures, based on the original sheet music without straying away from being an engaging read for non-musicians.

Jethro Tull are a British rock group formed in Blackpool, Lancashire, England, UK during 1967. At first playing blues rock, the band then began including elements of hard and folk rock to create a progressive rock sound. Tull is led by vocalist/flautist/guitarist Ian Anderson, having had a revolving door of lineups over the years, significant members having been guitarists Mick Abrahams and Martin Barre, keyboardist John Evan, drummers Clive Bunker, Barriemore Barlow, and Doane Perry, along with bassists Glenn Cornick, Jeffrey Hammond, John Glascock, and Dave Pegg. The group first broke through in 1969, with the folk-tinged blues album Stand Up, which topped the UK charts then toured regularly there and in the US. Their musical style moved in the direction of progressive rock with the L.Ps Aqualung (1971), Thick as a Brick (1972) and A Passion Play (1973), before shifting again towards hard rock mixed with folk rock, with Songs from the Wood (1977) and Heavy Horses (1978). Jethro Tull have sold an estimated 60 million albums worldwide, with 11 gold and 5 platinum L.Ps. They've been described by Rolling Stone magazine as "one of the most commercially successful and eccentric progressive rock bands". The group's last new material was issued during in 2003, though they continued to tour until 2011. Anderson said Jethro Tull were finished during 2014 but in September 2017 he announced plans for a tour to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their first album This Was then record a new studio L.P. during 2018. The band's latest line-up includes musicians who've been members of Anderson's solo group since 2012, Jethro Tull having embarked on a world tour on 1st March 2018.

The Legendary Jethro Tull - How many rock bands from the sixties can you name that are still around today? Probably not that many. There are a couple — the Rolling Stones, Santana-but most have broken up, stopped recording, and reappear only for the ubiquitous 'reunion' tours. Jethro Tull is one band that formed in 1968 and are still going strong, thanks to the leadership, vision, and extraordinary talent of its leader, Ian Anderson. Named after the 17th Century inventor of the seed drill, Jethro Tull have always been controversial, challenging, and completely impossible to categorize. Are they rock? Blues? 'Progressive'? English folk? These labels merely begin to describe Jethro Tull's eclectic and imaginative music. Author Raymond Benson looks at this legendary rock band and analyzes their place in pop music history. He examines every Jethro Tull album—track listing, personnel, cover art, recording history, and content. A handy rating system informs Tull newbies where to start and provides longtime fans with fodder for debate. A book for both the casual and hard-core fan, Jethro Tull is an insightful companion to enhance one's listening pleasure.
