By the time Christianity became a political and cultural force in the Roman Empire, it had come to embody a new moral vision. This wise and eloquent book describes the formative years--from the crucifixion of Jesus to the end of the second century of the common era--when Christian beliefs and practices shaped their unique moral order. Wayne A. Meeks examines the surviving documents from Christianity's beginnings (some of which became the New Testament) and shows that they are largely concerned with the way converts to the movement should behave. Meeks finds that for these Christians, the formation of morals means the formation of community; the documents are addressed not to individuals but to groups, and they have among their primary aims the maintenance and growth of these groups. Meeks paints a picture of the process of socialization that produced the early forms of Christian morality, discussing many factors that made the Christians feel that they were a single and "chosen" people. He describes, for example, the impact of conversion; the rapid spread of Christian household cult-associations in the cities of the Roman Empire; the language of Christian moral discourse as revealed in letters, testaments, and "moral stories"; the rituals, meetings, and institutionalization of charity; the Christians' feelings about celibacy, sex, and gender roles; and their sense of the end-time and final judgment. In each of these areas Meeks seeks to determine what is distinctive about the Christian viewpoint and what is similar to the moral components of Greco-Roman or Jewish thought.

In Moral Formation and the Virtuous Life, volume editor Paul M. Blowers has translated and gathered several key texts from early Christian sources to explore the broad themes of moral conscience and ethics. Readers will gain a sense of how moral formation was part of a process sustained by pastoral instruction and admonition based on ritual practice (baptism, eucharist, and liturgy) as well as learned ethical behaviors related to moral issues, such as sexual ethics, marriage and celibacy, wealth and poverty, pagan entertainment, military service, and more. Moral Formation and the Virtuous Life is part of Ad Fontes: Early Christian Sources, a series designed to present ancient Christian texts essential to an understanding of Christian theology, ecclesiology, and practice. The books in the series will make the wealth of early Christian thought available to new generations of students of theology and provide a valuable resource for the Church. Developed in light of recent Patristic scholarship, the volumes will provide a representative sampling of theological contributions from both East and West. The series aims to provide volumes that are relevant for a variety of courses: from introduction to theology to classes on doctrine and the development of Christian thought. The goal of each volume is not to be exhaustive, but rather representative enough to denote for a non-specialist audience the multivalent character of early Christian thought, allowing readers to see how and why early Christian doctrine and practice developed the way it did.

Excerpt from History of Christian Ethics: History of Christian Ethics Before the Reformation Among the many obligations which contemporary Christendom owes to the German Theology of the Nineteenth Century, not the least of them is due to its earnest revival and methodical cultivation of Christian Ethics as an essential department of theological science. Christianity, as primarily and predominantly a moral religion, has never lost sight of its cardinal bearing on human life, but certain special circumstances connected with the Christian movement itself have contributed to impress on the best theology of our time a more distinctively ethical character and tendency. The ecclesiastical Dogmatics of the Protestant Churches, which so well served their day in maintaining the essential truth of the primitive Christianity, have not kept pace with the general movement of thought, nor even advanced in harmony with the progress of the intellectual and moral revolution from which they sprang. Dogmatic Theology has thus largely fallen into disrepute as an arrested development or a decaying survival; and it has but rarely struck new roots into the vital soil of the latest scientific culture. The rise and progress of an independent Biblical Criticism, and the more scientific methods of reaching the primitive forces and vitality of the early Church, have in consequence determined a new return to the evangelical fountains of life, and have largely superseded and antiquated the elaborate Symbolics of the different Churches.
