Hem para kazanıp artık babama yük olmamak, hem yüksek lisans tezimi hazırlamak hem de tecrübe edinmek gayesiyle, ilçemde şeflik yaparken tanıştığım ve çok sevdiğim, her zaman ustam olarak gördüğüm büyüğümün müdür muavini olarak çalışmakta olduğu Isparta-Sütçüler Orman İşletmesinde, 1984 temmuzunda, “işçi mühendis” unvanıyla göreve başladım. Bir süre sonra, ilgili işletme şefimizin tayini çıkınca, müdür muavinimiz vekaleten bölgeyi üstlendi ve bölge neredeyse tamamen bana kaldı. Toplam 35.000 ha ormanım, 19.000 m3 damgam ve çalışan 3 dozerim vardı. Komşu işletme şefliklerine de, özellikle tohum meşcerelerinde ağaç seçimi ve ilk damga işleri için yardıma gidiyordum. Çok çalışıyordum, yoruluyordum ama yaptığım her işten büyük zevk lıyordum. Bu çalışmalarım sırasında, şefliklerin kütüphanelerindeki kitaplardan çok istifâde ettim; ama her defasında, silvikültür konularını özetleyip pratik bilgiler veren bir uygulama kitabı aradım. Yaklaşık bir yıl devam eden bu çalışma dönemimde, bu tip bir kitabın hep eksikliğini çektim ve karar verdim. Mümkün olursa bir gün mutlaka, teoriden uzak, bol resimli ve tablolu bir uygulama kitabı yazacaktım. Yaklaşık 22 yıl önceki düşümü, bu uygulama kitabı ile gerçekleştirmenin bahtiyarlığını yaşıyorum. Kuşkusuz eksikleri var. Siz değerli meslektaşlarımın ve öğrencilerimin kıymetli tavsiyelerine ve katkılarına her zaman olduğu gibi, yine açığım.
